Hardware Shortages Hurt Numbers
Laptop Battery How bad was the hardware shortage, particularly of PS2 and Xbox consoles, this year? Out of GameStop's 1,768 retail stores, the company only moved 168 total units of Xbox and PS2 systems combined in the weekend before Christmas. But don't feel too bad for the retailers just yet.
GameStop's same store sales were projected to rise between 6 and 9 percent in the nine weeks leading up to January, yet only saw an increase of .9 percent. Although the company's software sales rose 15 percent during the period and sales in general at the game-centric retailer were up 13.6 percent, GameStop's hardware sales were down 40 percent compared to December last year. Overall, GameStop saw its sales rise to $577.7 million during the period in question.
Electronics Boutique saw its total sales climb 22.3 percent to a total of $666 million, despite the fact that same store sales only rose a modest 3.6 percent. EB reported that its sales were affected by a lack of hardware as well. Not only that, but the company claims its software and accessory sales would have been higher as well had console hardware been available, as new console purchases at the store are typically accompanied by software and accessory sales.
It remains to be seen whether or not GameCube sales managed to benefit from the PS2 and Xbox hardware shortages.
