Reported West Nile Cases In NJ Rose In 2003

Laptop Battery The number of New Jersey residents infected with West Nile virus last year increased at least 33 percent from 2002, although figures for the southern part of the state remained flat.

Thinkpad Thirty-two New Jersey residents tested positive in 2003, up from the 24 cases in 2002, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

Laptop Computer State officials weren't available for comment on the numbers Monday. However, they said last year that while the number of human West Nile virus cases appeared to be alarming, they would wait for year-end totals before officially determining its severity in New Jersey.

Desktop Computer They also said the increase in human West Nile virus cases may not mean the situation is growing worse in New Jersey but stems from greater awareness of, and testing for, the disease.

Gateway # A 34-year-old Wildwood Crest, Cape May County, woman was diagnosed on Sept. 25 as having West Nile virus after developing a fever, headache, stiff neck and a rash, all symptoms of the disease. The woman didn't need to be hospitalized and eventually recovered.

Laptop Parts According to CDC reports filed as of Feb. 11, there were 9,136 cases of humans infected with West Nile virus nationwide in 2003. The figure came in at 4,156 for 2002.

Software CDC reports filed as of Feb. 11 show the number of West Nile virus-infected people who died in 2003 totaled 228. The number was 284 in 2002.

Hard Drives The bulk of West Nile virus cases are in western states, which are encountering only their first or second year of the disease. There were more than 2,400 cases in Colorado, 1,800 cases in Nebraska, and 1,000 in South Dakota.

Electronics New Jersey health officials believe those western states may not have been as prepared to handle West Nile virus as well as eastern states, which have dealt with the disease for a few years.

Cisco A state Health Department West Nile virus report posted on Dec. 11, the latest report available on test results, shows:

Monitor # 21 mosquito pools tested positive in Atlantic County, along with six in Cape May County, five in Cumberland County, and 16 in Ocean County.

Desktop # Nine horses tested positive in Atlantic County, along with five in Cape May County and eight each in Cumberland and Ocean counties.
