Spring Fling clean-up

Luther student volunteers will help Decorah area residents with spring household clean-up and fix-up chores Saturday, April 20, when Luther College Campus Ministries conducts its annual Spring Fling community assistance day.

Teams of Luther students will help with light household duties, such as yard-raking, house and yard cleaning, taking down storm windows, washing windows, and putting up screens for the summer.

Spring Fling teams provide service to anyone needing assistance with spring chores. Priority goes to requests from senior citizens and people with disabilities.

All donations received for the work will go to the Winneshiek County Food Closet and the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Resource Center.

To volunteer for Spring Fling contact Darrin Geier by Wednesday, April 17.

Astronomy observation session

Ever wish you could see Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus? Or have you wondered what lies beyond the familiar Milky Way? Now is your chance to see and find out.

Jeff Wilkerson, professor of physics, will lead an astronomy observation session Friday, April 12 from 9-10:30 p.m. on the Astronomy Observation Deck via Valders. Visitors may come any time during the 90-minute session.

The highlight of the evening will be views of galaxies lying far outside the Milky Way in the direction of the constellations Leo and Virgo.

Early in the session, observers will also be able to see four of the planets in the solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus, with the naked-eye.

In the event of cloudy skies or other inclement weather, a planetarium show will be offered.

Lecture: "Race: The American Dilemma"

One of the longest-standing issues in the country will be addressed Thursday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the CRH.

Professor of religion and philosophy Lori Pearson, Africana Studies Professor Novian Whitsitt and English and Africana Studies Professor Martin Klammer will host a lecture and discussion session titled "Race: The American Dilemma," the final presentation in the 2001-02 Paideia Endowment Lecture Series.

The three professors taught a J-term course together called "Race: The American Dilemma." Thursday night's program is based on readings and discussions from that course.

The class investigated the effects of race and racism in society and private life. Issues addressed included racial privilege in the United States, racial images in contemporary culture and the role of faith in promoting racial justice.

Community Assembly

At Tuesday's Community Assembly meeting, the Naked Soccer Task Force brought their preliminary recommendations to the discussion table.

The Task Force's recommendations included enforcement policies for the event, sanctions for those who play and ways to communicate policies to the community.

"The sanctions are really directed toward student safety," said Task Force co-chair Lise Kildegaard.

As of Tuesday's meeting the final report was not yet finished. The task force's final report will be made to President Torgerson Friday.

Once the recommendations have been reviewed by the president, he will call a campus wide meeting to announce the final policies regarding Naked Soccer.
