OSoft Releases ThoutReader - A Virtual Library for Developers
Open Source Software Standardizes Linux and Other Open Source Documentation
TACOMA, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 2004--OSoft.com today announced the initial release of the ThoutReader(TM), an open source documentation platform that works like a virtual library so developers can quickly organize and search all of their reference documentation at once.
The ThoutReader(TM), which will be distributed at no charge via the OSoft.com and other development community sites, allows developers to upload their web documentation and electronic versions of their favorite reference books that will soon be available to developers via the OSoft.com web site. Using the ThoutReader(TM) developers can then browse, search, bookmark, and append all of their documentation at the same time - offline. The ThoutReader(TM) makes it easy for developers to cut and paste sample code from their documentation directly into their programs, improving the quality and speed of development time.
"Up until now, there has been no standardization for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, (L.A.M.P.) and other open source training, documentation and content retrieval," said Mark Carey, OSoft president. "The ThoutReader(TM) changes all that because now developers can turn to one place on their computer to access their development documentation which is customized to what they load into it, whether that's proprietary code, Web content, or top selling reference books they can purchase online at our store."
The ThoutReader(TM) is already catching on globally as well. Hostway.com installed the ThoutReader(TM) in their developer environment worldwide during OSoft's beta testing period. "Our development team is spread across different countries all around the world," said Jason Abate, Sr. Director of Engineering at Hostway. "Keeping documentation for all the technologies we use, both proprietary and open source is a major focus so that all members of our development team have the latest information at all times. This allows us to pro-actively update documentation and add new packages for everyone at once."
Paul Jones, a developer at Novell Developer Services, said, "Open Source application documentation often lacks organization and consistency. The ThoutReader(TM) increases productivity because of its capability to search across, not only application documentation, but also related books which show tips, tricks, screen shots and examples, all in the same coherent fashion."
The ThoutReader(TM) is a cross-platform application and supports localization. OSoft also provides ThoutCreator(TM) tools, which allow developers to create and publish new content or translate existing content that can be published in the ThoutReader format. The ThoutReader(TM) and ThoutCreator(TM) tools are distributed free and are available at www.osoft.com. Said Carey, "If the content is free, we provide it free."
