Quest Software's SQL Optimizer Improves Performance and Availability of Critical Applications on DB2 UDB

Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB Automates Code Tuning and Maximizes Application Performance

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2004-- Quest Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:QSFT), a leading provider of application, database and Windows management solutions, today announced the release of Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB, version 2.7. Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB is based on technology developed by the SQL tuning experts at LECCOTECH, which was recently acquired by Quest Software. Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB is a performance optimization tool that reduces the risk of downtime and improves user satisfaction by automating the process of proactively identifying and resolving SQL operational issues affecting database applications.
Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB is unique in that it automatically generates all alternative SQL scenarios that result in the same outcome to guarantee the most efficient SQL statement, while guaranteeing that the results match the original version. It also enables users to expand an application's scalability. For environments that have reached a particular limitation, such as the maximum number of users permitted to run an application before it's paralyzed by CPU constraints, Quest SQL Optimizer removes that boundary by identifying and optimizing the offensive SQL, resulting in higher scalability thresholds.

"With growing data volumes, an increasing number of databases, and enhanced SLAs, managing databases is becoming even more resource-intensive and requires greater planning," wrote Noel Yuhanna, senior industry analyst, Forrester Research. In his July 2004 report, DBMS: Foundation Of Application Infrastructure, he adds, "Enterprises must focus on formalizing database management through planning, standardization, and best practice adoption to improve operational efficiency and lower costs. Best practices include automating administrative tasks, standardizing DBMSes, formalizing administrative processes and procedures, performing database consolidation, and enforcing strong security measures."

IT managers are under increasing pressure to ensure the availability and performance of business-critical applications. SQL performance problems are difficult to locate and are often not realized until after the quality assurance phase of application development. This can lead to business application and process slow downs, service-level agreements not met, and internal and external customer satisfaction issues. Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB addresses these issues by offering complete SQL performance optimization with proactive problematic SQL detection, automated SQL optimization and benchmarking capabilities to maximize operational efficiency and improve scalability.

"Quest Software is committed to providing powerful, best of breed solutions to users of DB2 to address application performance and availability challenges and Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB delivers that exceedingly well," said John Newsom, vice president, application performance management, Quest Software. "By using market-leading SQL optimization technology acquired from LECCOTECH, Quest expands its heterogeneous application performance management capabilities."

Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB ensures application performance is maximized. It is used during the development QA phase to automate manual trial-and-error SQL tuning practices and minimize performance problems before database applications are deployed. And, during production, Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB enables users to maintain optimal performance of database applications, thereby guaranteeing the maximum return on investment.

Pricing and Availability

Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 UDB is available now with pricing starting at $4,800 U.S. per server. Additional information can be found at: http://www.quest.com/db2/qso/.
