Organizations Don't Protect Against Email Messages Lost By Server Outages
DALLAS, TX and TORONTO, ON September 7, 2004 Many large enterprises are risking their business by not providing adequate measures to safeguard against losing email when servers fail, is the stark warning from BorderWare Technologies. The maker of MXtreme, the market-leading email security solution, cites that message queuing, an inherent function of email security systems designed to protect against spam, viruses and other threats, is the main area at risk and says that regardless of whether round robin or load balancers are used, high-availability cannot be achieved unless the data itself can be protected against loss.

If a system in a cluster should fail after it has received a message but before it has delivered it, that message will be lost forever. All SMTP store-and-forward relays are subject to the same message queuing vulnerability. As mail volumes have increased, this vulnerability has grown, and the number of messages that may be in this state received but not yet delivered can easily climb into the thousands. A recent survey conducted by Osterman Research revealed that more than 80% of enterprises have experienced an unplanned email outage, with an average downtime of 5.7 hours.
"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

"We're all outraged when the postal service loses or delays mail and yet organizations just shrug their shoulders when email is lost because of a system failure," comments Peter Cox, Vice President of BorderWare Technologies. "Today's email messages carry far more business-critical information than the majority of snail mail. Delaying a vital order can cost large businesses hundreds of thousands in lost productivity, missed contractual deadlines, delayed invoices and payments, the loss of goodwill, and revenue."

In the last eighteen months, email has become increasingly transactional in nature. Confirmation of purchases, exchange of financial and legal information, and time-sensitive documents are all considered normal activities over email. Missing that one critical email due to a spam false-positive, an inappropriately configured policy or a virus outbreak can be detrimental, but losing hundreds or thousands of messages because a server has crashed, can seriously affect an organization's bottom line. Enterprises are also legally liable once an email has been received by their messaging system.
IP, you must specify the IP address that the FastLynx server is listening on. You can also specify the computer name or domain name of the server computer if the client computer knows that name. If the name is not known, you will see a Ìost not found error message, which means that the actual IP address must be supplied. If the server has changed the default port number (2689),

"Email has moved way beyond being just an effective method of communicating but you wouldn't recognize its importance by the ad-hoc way that organizations treat email in their business continuity plans," continues Cox. "Most plans offer very little protection against the possible loss of email due to overloading or outright system failure. They need to implement a solution that replicates queues and intelligently synchronizes messages to a defined mirror system within a cluster. That way, if any system should fail, the mirror system will deliver its messages."
