Fuel-Cell Companies Applaud Bush's Initiative

Laptop Battery Stephen Tang pumped his fist Tuesday when President Bush proposed spending $1.2 billion to develop nonpolluting hydrogen-powered cars. "Attaboy!" Tang exclaimed.

year career at IBM, a global information technology company where he was a member of IBM senior leadership team. There he held multiple roles, from overseeing the company worldwide competitive and server sales to leading sales, services, marketing and channel operations for IBM software business in Asia Pacific. During this time he resided in Tokyo, Japan.

Thinkpad He runs Millennium Cell Inc. in Eatontown. It's one of at least 30 New Jersey companies racing to perfect technologies for harnessing the power of hydrogen, the most abundant molecule in the universe.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Microsoft "It was quite a moment to hear an oil man say 'hydrogen' and 'energy of the future.' It was a defining moment for energy independence," Tang said yesterday.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computers Other hydrogen groups echoed Tang's glee over the president's message and a rival $6.5 billion proposal by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D- N.D.).

Computer Memory Outlet sells memory compatible with all leading computer manufacturers like Dell, Apple, Compaq, HP, Sony, IBM, Lenovo, and many more.”

Laptop Computer In his State of the Union, Bush called for a new commitment to create environmentally friendly cars. Stressing America's need to wean itself from foreign oil, Bush touted "a simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen (that) generates energy, which can be used to power a car producing only water, not exhaust fumes."

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Desktop Computer Bush was referring to fuel cells, a technology that was cutting-edge in 1839. Fuel cells use chemical reactions to make electricity from hydrogen. NASA has used them aboard spacecraft for decades, and fleets of fuel cell-driven cars and buses are being tested in California, Canada and Europe.

Notebooks Once-bulky fuel cells now fit inside car trunks, and cruising ranges are surpassing 200 miles. The auto industry, which spends more than $1 billion a year on fuel-cell research, anticipates the first pricey consumer models will hit showrooms around 2012.

Lenovo The biggest challenge will be getting hydrogen to filling stations.

Hard Drive Lighter than air, hydrogen gas is tricky to transport and store. It does not exist in a free state, so it must be extracted -- which takes energy -- from water or natural gas, methanol, gasoline, coal or biomass, said Peter Hoffmann of the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Newsletter.

Travelstar Some environmentalists want the United States to invest in creating a hydrogen delivery system.

Gateway Other industry groups favor faster, cheaper -- and less clean -- methods for converting natural gas, methanol or gasoline into hydrogen. Such conversion might occur at the pump, or in devices inside cars.

Laptop Parts Nobody knows what all this might cost, but all agree the hydrogen economy won't come cheap.

Software At a minimum, the government estimates hydrogen costs four times more to produce than gasoline. And fuel cells cost ten times more than typical engines.

Hard Drives The "Hindenburg factor" poses another hurdle. The image of the hydrogen-filled Nazi zeppelin ablaze over Lakehurst in 1937 is seared into the public mind.

Electronics Michael Swain of the University of Miami conceded hydrogen has dangers, but he says when all is said and done, fuel-cell vehicles are still safer than gasoline-powered cars.

Canon The Union of Concerned Scientists urged tougher fuel economy requirements. "With oil use increasing at alarming rates rates, President Bush should aggressively push conventional technologies that can deliver cost-effective savings today--as opposed to waiting two decades," its Jason Mark said.

Desktop Pc "An Apollo project is needed to hasten the arrival of fuel-cell vehicles, but the administration's proposed budget isn't enough to get to the launching pad," Mark said.

Desktop Computers Bush actually is calling for $720 million of new funds, on top of about $1 billion already proposed for fuel cell research in cars.

Think Pad His new "Freedom Fuel" initiative and last year's "FreedomCAR" proposal could reduce America's greenhouse gas emissions by 500 million metric tons by 2040 and trim demand for foreign oil by 11 million barrels per day, according to the Department of Energy. That happens to be the same amount that America now imports daily.

Repair The California Fuel Cell Partnership is testing 16 fuel-cell powered cars from seven automakers, logging about 90,000 miles over the last year, said spokesman Joseph Irvin.

Data Recovery A special station pumps hydrogen, trucked in from chemical companies. Another station uses electricity to split hydrogen from water, a process called electrolysis.

Cisco Later this year, another experimental station will derive hydrogen from natural gas.

Keyboard While the cars are peppy, quiet and exceed 200 miles per fill-up, Irvin said surveys show just one in three Californians has heard of fuel cells.

Monitor Another problem is squeezing enough hydrogen -- sometimes stored as a super-cooled liquid -- into cars for extended ranges. Ford and General Motors have explored high-pressure tanks.

Desktop Tang's company is working with DaimlerChrysler to chemically bind hydrogen in a saltwater solution. This nonflammable solution has roughly the same volume and weight as gasoline, yields equivalent power, and could be trucked to filling stations with the same ease, he said.

Infosys A system in the car extracts hydrogen from the solution; the exhaust is water vapor and borax that gets recycled.

Refurbished Laptops Test vehicles have achieved ranges of 300 miles, Tang said, noting Millennium Cell is striving for ways to make this salty brew using renewable energy sources.

Wipro "It's probably five to 10 years away from large-scale implementation," Tang said.
