AMD Gaining over Intel Sales Forecast

Thinkpad (AXcess News) New York - Following Intel Corporation's (Nasdaq: INTC) sales forecast, shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD) gained $1.25, or 4.87%, to close at $26.90 and continued gaining in after-marketing trading, moving up another 6 cents.

AMD and Intel are the two most common processors in laptops. The newer 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion 64 are generally more expensive than the lower power counterparts. Know what you will be using the laptop for and the processor you should pick have just a bit more power than needed. Don't opt for high processor power if you don't really need it.

Microsoft Intel shares dropped but managed to recover and gain 38 cents to close at $26.08, but Intel's stock followed AMD in after-market trading adding another 7 cents to push Intel's shares up over 1.5 percent overall.

Laptop Computers Intel forecast sales for the quarter of $10.4 to $10.6 billion while analsyts had anticipated the no. 1 chip maker to forecast higher sales, signaling that Intel was unsure of its growth in the near-term. Other chip makers had raised their sales forecasts Wednesday and analysts expected Intel to be more in line with Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TXN) and Xilinx Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX).

Processor Laptop computers used to fall short when comparing processing speed with desktop computers. With today's technology, however, those times are soon coming to an end. Manufacturers like Intel and AMD have stepped up their development and are now making processors for laptops that are quite comparable to those of desktops. This allows consumers who want portability to also have the speed and power they need.

Laptop Computer Texas Instruments shares were up 74 cents, or 2.27 percent, at $33.37, which is getting closer to its 52-week of $34.68. Xilinx's shares were up 63 cents, or 2.42 percent, at $26.65.

The processor is the most important choice you need to make in setting up your own computer. You have to know exactly what kind and how fast you need. There are a variety of options from AMD and Intel, AMD Athlon, AMD Sempron, AMD Duron, Intel Celeron, Intel Core Duo, among others. If you only use the computer to surf the web, do word processing, gaming and some graphics editing, the 1. 2.0 GHz might be enough. Extreme gaming, 3D rendering and video editing would need at least a 2.4GHz processor.

Desktop Computer AMD has been market headway with its Opteron chip for server computers that run networks, which has been putting pressure on Intel's market share. With Intel lowering its mid-quarter sales forecast analysts became more convinced that AMD in deed had gained on Intel's market share. AMD is the no. 2 chip maker.
