I have used Ghost 2003 for my backups but always had problems with some of my 8 (!) computers. A few days ago I bought a Maxtor 80 Gb ext USB 1.1/2.0 hard drive. After wrestling for hours with downloads from Ghost and installing extra drivers from Ghost I finally got it to work on one computer. (Ghost works ok here most of the time, with partitions on the internal C: drive but last week one of my laptops lost the HD and of course the Ghost backup). laptop battery

Ghost will not work with my old USB1 L10/10 Gb external hard drive. After spending a few hours on google trying to find an answer, and reading Ghost horror stories, I came across Acronis True Image?.0. After spending an other hour looking at reviews of that software I downloaded the Acronis software and put it on a cd. They have a special for $9.00 for users of Ghost!!! Now get this! That software works on All of my computers and even the 4 year old USB 1, yes 1 not 1, 1 ext hard drive. And it does it in Windows. thinkpad

It is however not very fast but that is a minor trade off for me. The slow speed could be caused by my use of USB 1.1. I use XP, 98 SE, 2K. The recovery CD or 5 floppies will work on any computer or operating system or No operating system at all! So unlike Ghost you only need one recovery cd. microsoft

A gui imagining product. Sure... whatever. I could not believe my eyes! I can not tell you how happy this product has made me. It is a lab nerds dream to have such a product. A dream come true. So simple but so tremendously powerful. Incredible! You have reduced the imaging of my lab computers down to an amazing incredible reduction in time. The ease that it went on to the systems. That incredible boot CD/floppy boot disk! The products ability to recognize it s hardware environment pretty much blew me away! Being hard headed about a mainstay product, cost me hour after hour of frustration trying to get that spooky software to work. Your product is amazing and makes theirs look ridiculous. I wonder how many other people out there are going through the same frightening experience. I am shocked at how your product differed in easy of use and speed. Really, the best $50 bucks I think I have spent in a long long time. notebooks

I was just getting used to this new purity in motion, when Steve Lawton, my contact at Acronis headquarters in South San Francisco, California, sent an urgent email. He said that a new version 7 of Acronis True Image was being introduced in December with a boatload of additions and upgrades including a pretty new face. network

I ve heard that before, but this upgrade lives up to the ballyhoo and then some. The pretty face is an XP look, a vast improvement of the rather stark appearance of version 6. But most impressive was the efficiency of operation - where I had backed up my OS to a second hard drive in 13 minutes using version 6, the new Acronis True Image accomplished the job in ONLY 4 minutes! And the restore function - getting your system back from disaster - has been made simple through the addition of the Acronis Secure Zone (a hidden partition - roughly 5.5 Gb of disk space, but it can be resized larger) where you can, if you wish, store system images. To get there you merely begin normal bootup, then press F11 when asked, to move into the Acronis Recovery Manager (a Linux-based utility with an XP face) from which you can easily regain your OS image from the zone and put everything back in working order! digital cameras

If you already have a storage plan in place, you don t need to use the zone. You can store the images where ever you wish on other partitions or on CDs or DVDs and use ATI s regular restore function. Also new in version 7 is your choice of making either a new full backup OR the creation of an incremental backup - you add to a previous backup only that material that is new or changed. It saves even more time and space! desktops

To make this whole pattern of backups work even better, there is a new scheduling system (you can set the software to create unattended, full or incremental backups at any time) and an image verification tool - a method of assuring your images are error free. And for those interested in a new hard drive there is a new cloning and disk deployment feature to migrate all data, operating systems, programs, software patches and updates, configuration files, preferences, e-mail and everything else, automatically. cognos

Acronis True Image version 7 takes up about 20 MB of disk space. It requires a Pentium 133 MHz or higher and 64 MB or more of RAM. The supported operating systems are - Windows 98 / 95 / XP / Me / 2000 Pro / NT 4.0 Workstation SP 6. The supported file systems are - FAT 16 / 32, NTFS, Linux Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP. The Invisible Man Backup and Be Good

Acronis has a new version of its great backup program, Acronis True Image , which works with Win 95 and up. internet

There are a couple of things to really like about this program, but one in particular answers a problem raised by many readers over the years. It s simply this: If your hard drive crashes but you have a backup, how do you restore the backup to a drive that you can t start The answer with True Image is that it can reboot your Windows computer from its own backup system. No recovery disk is needed; the system can be restored in a few minutes even if the original hard drive has become corrupted. cheap computer

Other features to like: - Acronis True Image 7 makes a complete image of your original drive. You can take it anywhere and place your whole system on a new computer. When you travel you can rent one or use a vacant machine at a company office. - Incremental backups. That means you only have to back up the whole system once, and after that the backup only records changes. - You can continue working while Acronis True Image is making a clone of your entire system. digital camera

- You can back up to another drive or to a hidden partition on the original drive. So, if you don t happen to have another drive handy, you can back up important files to a partition no one else can see, and keep them safe from either accidental erasure or prying eyes. printer

Acronis True Image 7.0 Acronis True Image 7.0: enhancements over version 6 of the disk cloning tool

A few months ago, I wrote a glowing review for the Acronis True Image 6 backup software. Oddly enough, a few weeks after I wrote the review, Acronis released a new version of Acronis True Image. Now at version 7, Acronis True Image adds new features and essentially addresses my previous concerns with the software. If you haven t already read that review then you may want to read it first. maxtor

What is Acronis True Image As a refresher, it s disk imaging software that allows you to create exact disk images of your hard disk or partitions. The difference between disk imaging software and backup software is that imaging software takes a snapshot of your actual disk or partition making an exact backup of your programs, system files, and data. Backup software simply backs up individual files. data storage

Acronis True Image 7 supports nearly all of the modern Windows operating systems from Windows 98 onward (ME/NT/2K/XP) and supports all of the major file systems including FAT16/32, NTFS, Linux Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP. hitachi

Don t worry about enabling the SwiftRestore option; it s best to use it for creating archive files that you may not need to access for years to come. Click Next and then click Backup Now, and Genie Backup Manager will create your backup. rational

Click Verify Now if you want to check the integrity of the data and then click Main Page. After that, click Schedule Wizard in the right pane, click Create New Schedule, select the name of the backup you just created, and click Next. Select Daily, Weekly, or Monthly from the drop-down menu (depending on how often you want to maintain the backup), and select any additional options that might be necessary to fit the backup process within your schedule, such as the time frame and day of the week you want the software to run an automated backup. Click Next, enter the User Name and Password for your computer (if necessary), and click Finish. websphere

Acronis True Image 9.0 Home lets you create a carbon copy of your entire hard drive. Genie Backup Manager will automatically maintain the backup file you created, including adding any new files created afterward or changing files that are edited as the contents of the files and folders you selected change over time. battery

Take the Drive-Imaging Route

If you want to make a backup of your entire hard drive, or transfer the contents of an existing drive to a newer, higher-capacity drive, you should definitely invest in a good third-party application that s designed for these tasks. Acronis True Image 9.0 Home is one such product, and it s very user-friendly. To use it, you must install the new hard drive as a secondary or slave drive using the instructions the drive shipped with, and then you need to make sure the new drive has as much or more storage space than the original hard drive. it support

If you have WinXP, an option to create a writeable folder appears whenever you insert a blank CD in the computer s recordable/rewriteable CD drive. After that, launch Acronis True Image, click Clone Disk, and click Next. Select the Automatic radio button, click Next, select the icon for the hard drive you want to copy, and click Next. This time, select the icon for the drive you want to copy data to and click Next. If the new drive isn t completely empty, select the Delete Partitions On The Destination Hard Disk radio button and click Next. western digital

Click Next again, and select the Keep Data radio button if you want to keep a copy of all of the original data on the original hard drive; if not, select Create A New Partition Layout to erase the original drive but leave it ready to store data in the future. music

Click Next and select Normal if you decided to get rid of the data on the old hard drive. This option overwrites the data several times, making the information almost impossible to recover should someone get their hands on the old drive. Click Next and select Proportional to maintain the structure of the original drive but compensate for the additional space. Click Next and click Proceed to clone the drive. networks

When the operation is complete, you should be able to install the new drive as the primary hard drive and then use the old drive for additional storage or to permanently store all of the files you just copied. toner

A Bright Future for Backups

Of course, if what Microsoft claims is true, you may not need articles such as this one once the company releases Windows Vista. The OS (operating system) successor to WinXP supposedly will include integrated backup software that is much more powerful than the Backup utility shipped with previous versions and include the ability to back up files directly to optical discs. Additional features remain to be seen, but until Microsoft finally releases Vista (which will likely take quite awhile), at least we have products such as Genie Backup Manager and Acronis True Image to cater to our backup needs, allowing for scheduled backup, online automated backup, incremental backup and whatsoever. cheap laptops

Want to get the files you created with Windows XP s Backup utility onto an optical disc but don t have third-party backup software If possible, use the disc-recording application that came with your recordable/rewriteable optical drive. But if you don t have such an application, you can still use WinXP s integrated recording capabilities to find a way to store data on a CD. (Unfortunately, DVDs aren t supported.) wholesale

Insert a recordable/rewriteable CD in your CD-R (CD-recordable) or CD-RW (CD-rewriteable) drive, select Open Writable CD Folder when the option appears in the drive s dialog box, and click OK. If that option doesn t automatically appear, click My Computer from the Start menu and double-click the CD-R/-RW drive icon. Navigate to the folder where you saved the backup file(s) and drag and drop the file(s) to the window that s open for the CD-R/-RW drive. brother

Backup files that WinXP s Backup utility created use the .BKF file extension. If your settings currently hide file extensions, open any folder, open the Tools menu, click Folder Options, choose the View tab, deselect the Hide Extensions for Known File Types checkbox, and click Apply To All Folders. netvista

After the BKF file or files are visible in the CD-R/-RW drive s window (you can drag and drop as many backup files as space permits), click Write These Files to CD and click Next to finish the recording process. camera

Lessons learnt Star letter

I ve just been reading Mark Sergeant s letter about PCA (issue 134). He s so right! I ve been a reader for just over four years. When I bought my first PC in 2000 I was frightened to death of it. Eighteen months ago I also built my own PC but as yet have not ventured into building one for anyone else. Modesty wouldn t allow me to call myself a genius, but PCA has certainly enhanced my computing experience a great deal. Thanks PCA. cheap

One thing I have learned along the way is that it pays to be security conscious. When our computers are up and running it s all too easy to think that the unthinkable won t happen. Yet what if your computer along with its precious data was stolen Thanks to PCA providing a copy of Acronis True Image I have a solution. Initially, I started to back up my PC to CDs and, while this worked, it was a boring process having to feed CDs into the computer at regular intervals. My solution was to buy a hard drive and a removable caddy. Creating an image is now a doddle. I m also a great believer in partitions so I can back up selectively when required. windows

A few weeks after installing the second hard drive a situation arose where, in the absence of my backup, I would have had to do a disk reformat and reinstall. If you ve ever done this you ll know what a pain in the neck it is. With Acronis True Image it took about 20 minutes. Sorted! monitors

One final word. Keep your computer and removable hard drive as far from each other as possible when not being used. You wouldn t want both of them stolen or damaged in the same fire/lightning strike. And yes, in case you re wondering, I do work in the insurance industry. linux

Acronis True Image 7.0 Rating: 8/10

Acronis True Image, as the name suggests, is an imaging utility. It was the first to support imaging of the boot partition without restarting in DOS, and this meant it could support a wide range of target media. But this is just the beginning of its versatility. used laptops

For example, the program actively encourages you to start the imaging process and then go off and continue with your work - once the image is finished, any changes made since the image was started are incorporated into it. Second, the program supports incremental images back-ups, so you can have a back-up that you update when you want. So, Acronis True Image 7.0, in contrast to version 6.0, can execute 3 sorts of backup, creating a full, differential or incremental image. cameras

If this isn t enough, Acronis True Image 7 is capable of creating its own hidden partition at the end of your hard drive (the size is dependent on how much free space you have) for storing image backups that you can t access from outside the program itself. This Acronis Secure Zone can, if it s on your boot drive, be loaded before Windows if necessary, making it a useful fail-safe option if Windows becomes unbootable. scanners

You can view your images directly from Windows Explorer by assigning a virtual drive letter to one of them - the drive is read-only too, so the original archive is always protected. Finally, the program includes the Acronis Migrate Easy tool, which can clone one drive s contents to another and even prepare a disk for that purpose. panasonic

The program is currently only available as an electronic download, but it s so easy to use that you won t need the electronic manual. The only drawback is that it s relatively slow. "Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis.
