Stalking the Wild Striped Bass

On both coasts, chemical runoff into the rivers where striped bass spawn has threatened the fish’s birthrate. Along the East Coast, a concerted effort has been made to check the runoff, especially around Chesapeake Bay, and there have been similar efforts on the West Coast.
Laptop Battery There are many good places to fish for striped bass on the East Coast. One of the most renowned is Nantucket, where Barry Thurston’s Tackle Shop on Candle Street (508/228-9595), the largest on the island, rents rods and will hook you up with guides who have boats or sand-ready four-by-fours to take you out onto the miles of beaches to surf-cast. During these migrations, the waters off the coast of Massachusetts are spectacularly crowded with the fish. Oddly enough, stripers on the West Coast seem to move only when it’s time to spawn, and don’t course up and down coastal waters like their eastern progenitors. About the only hot spot for catching them is San Francisco Bay.
