In 2006, 4, 200 people in the United States were infected with the West Nile virus and 177 died. So far this year, only about a dozen deaths have been reported, but the number of infections has increased fourfold compared to the same time last year.

Travelstar That period is preceded by the peak season for the disease-carrying mosquitoes, with that season being the third or fourth week in August, Leusner said.

Gateway It is not until late September that the bulk of test results start coming in from people who have contracted the disease from those mosquitoes, gotten sick and have been tested for West Nile virus, she said.

Laptop Parts Private laboratories also are reporting test results more quickly this year, another possible reason why the numbers are spiking, Leusner said.
