Nintendo Profits Down
Laptop Battery Nintendo today revealed its annual financial report to its Japanese investors.
While sales for the 2003 fiscal year, which ended on March 31st, 2004, were up by over 10 billion yen, profits dropped over 50%. FY 2003 profit was 33,194,000,000 yen (US$299.1 million), and FY2002 profit was 67,267,000,000 yen (US$606.2 million).
This decline in profits, which is obviously bad, is being blamed on a drop in software sales in the Japanese market and hardware competition. Sales were up for Nintendo due to games like Mario Advance 4 and Donkey Kong Country which sold over one million units worldwide, and Pokmon Ruby and Sapphire which are expected to surpass six million units sold worldwide.
In the 2003 fiscal year, Nintendo sold 17.59 million Game Boy Advance units worldwide. 9.45 million of those sales were in North America, and 3.15 million from Japan. The majority of the Game Boy Advance units sold were Game Boy Advance SP units. Worldwide sales totals for the GBA are 51.4 million units, with 24.81 million units sold in North America and 13.21 million units sold in Japan. As far as games, 74.89 million games were sold worldwide, with 42.43 million games sold in North America and 17.12 million games sold in Japan. In total, 183.79 million GBA games have been sold worldwide.
In the 2003 fiscal year, Nintendo sold 5.02 million GameCube units worldwide. This, however, is a decline from the 2002 fiscal year. In FY2003, 2.72 million units were sold in North America, and 990,000 in Japan. Worldwide GCN sales are currently at 14.57 million units, with 7.85 million GameCube units sold in North America and 3.46 million GCN units sold in Japan. Despite a drop in the sales of GameCube units, GameCube game sales increased by over one million. 47.37 million GCN games were sold in FY2003 worldwide, with 28.35 million games sold in North America and 8.5 million games sold in Japan. In total, 107.87 million GameCube games have been sold worldwide, with 64.58 million games sold in North America and 18.9 million games sold in Japan.
For the future Nintendo expects a sales drop in GBA and GCN hardware and software. However, Nintendo expects to ship 3.5 million Nintendo Dual Screen units, and 15.0 million DS games this year. Nintendo's FY2004 sales are estimated at 530,000,000,000 yen (US$4.78 billion), with profits of 70,000,000,000 yen (US$631.3 million).
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
