Sony Bids $5 Billion For MGM
Laptop Battery In a move that could have a major effect on the gaming industry, Sony has put in a US$5 billion bid to purchase to takeover MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) and all of its properties, including film properties. With the winning bid, Sony could become the over 4,000 films, including franchises such as James Bond, Rocky, Robocop and the Pink Panther. In addition, Sony would own over 10,000 television episodes. Sony would also own MGM videogame franchises. The game franchises would not immediately become PlayStation exclusive, however, due to existing contrasts and legalities.
Sony taking over MGM could lead to movies on the Universal Media Disc (UMD) medium, the same medium that the Sony's PlayStation Portable will use.
Sony has not won the bid yet. At the time of this posting there is talk and rumor that Time Warner may try to outbid Sony in order to acquire MGM.
