Live is known for energetic stage performances and lead singer Ed Kowalcyzk's cryptic lyrics spiced with religious undertones of his Christian upbringing and Eastern influences. Kowalcyzk is a devout follower of guru Adi Da Samaraj.
The band's third release, "Secret Samadhi," contains many references to this Eastern influence: the track "Lakini's Juice," refers to the Hindu god of destruction.
"The Distance to Here" is the band's fourth major release, after "Mental Jewelry" in 1991, "Throwing Copper" in 1994 and "Secret Samadhi" in 1999. The new album retains the same signature sound of their "Mental Jewelry" days, with their straightforward, radio-friendly alternative-rock. In the style of "Lightening Crashes"-which hit number one on the charts and their biggest hit to date-their new CD features such hits as "Feel the Quiet River Rage," "The Dolphin's Cry," "Run to the Water," Face and Ghost" and "Voodoo Lady."
Live was Billboard's "Artist of the Year" in 1995.
Live's first single, "Selling the Drama" from their "Throwing Copper" album also went to the top spot.
"Secret Samadhi,"was number one on Billboards charts in 1997. The band has sold over 14 million records, with "Throwing Copper" sales at over 7 million.
After the success of their first single, "Selling the Drama,"
Live toured 18 months and performed more than 250 shows before going back to the studio to record "Secret Samadhi" in 1996.
