Laptop Battery Five days after the power failure that blacked out all or part of eight states and two Canadian provinces, President Bush said today that Congressional Republicans had assured him that a conference committee would begin work within 20 days on a final package of energy legislation.
It's no secret that energy executives enjoy a cozy relationship with the Bush administration, whose energy policy served as the basis for recent energy bills in both the House and the Senate. But Americans deserve policies that promote safe, clean and affordable energy, not policies that are a grab bag of pricey giveaways to corporate polluters. The measure Mr. Kerrey praises rightly died as Congress adjourned. Lawmakers should oppose efforts to resurrect this flawed legislation next year and instead write a bill that benefits consumers, not campaign contributors.
Thinkpad Speaking near his vacation ranch in Crawford, Tex., Mr. Bush told reporters that he spoke by telephone Monday night with two crucial Republican lawmakers on energy issues Sen. Pete V. Domenici of New Mexico and Representative Billy Tauzin of Louisiana and that they had assured him they could reach an agreement on the hard-fought energy legislation.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Microsoft The president said he was "very confident" that the legislation would include mandatory standards on reliability, including penalties if electricity suppliers failed to reliably provide power.

Laptop Computers "What that means is, that companies transmitting energy will have to have strong reliability measures in place, otherwise there will be a consequence for them," he said. "There will be incentives in the new bill to encourage investment in energy infrastructure."
"Rob will also work with Congress to pass reforms that will help us reduce earmarks and wasteful spending in the federal budget. Congress is now considering an emergency supplemental bill that can show the American people we're determined to be responsible with their money. I've set a clear limit on spending that I will accept in this legislation, and if this bill goes over that limit, I'll veto it, " Bush concluded.
Laptop Computer He added: "I have been calling for an energy bill for a long time. And now is the time for the Congress to move and get something done."
The chairman of the Senate Energy Committee on Wednesday urged U.S. President George W. Bush to do more to steer Congress toward passing a broad energy bill stalled in the Senate. While Bush has made overhauling U.S. energy policy a top priority for his administration, the issue did not earn much space in the president's State of the Union speech to Congress on Tuesday night. "I urge you to pass legislation to modernize our electricity system, promote conservation, and make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy, " Bush said in the one sentence in his speech devoted to energy.
Desktop Computer Mr. Bush, who indicated his preference for the House version of the legislation, would not say whether he wanted the bill a controversial package that has been lurching slowly through Congress to include any other special provisions geared to preventing blackouts, though he said he was confident that House and Senate negotiators could reach overall agreement.
Notebooks Republican and Democratic legislators have been less sanguine about this, however. The Democrats have said the administration should strip the more controversial provisions from the package, including one to permit oil drilling in sensitive Alaska wilderness areas. Republicans say the blackouts, with their severe economic disruptions, underline the need for a broader approach.
Lenovo President Bush also indicated that while he believed that new individual tax cuts were not needed now to invigorate the economy, corporate tax cuts might make sense.
Hard Drive "I believe the tax relief packages we have in place are doing their job," he said. "But I'm a flexible person."
Travelstar Mr. Bush also noted that Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham is to meet with his Canadian counterpart on Wednesday to discuss a joint inquiry into the blackout, though he allowed that "I don't know how long it's going to take to find out what went wrong."
