Teros Introduces Application Security Gateway for Small and Medium Enterprises

New FireLine Appliance Deploys and Protects Any Web Application in Less than One Hour

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2004--Teros, the company that secures web infrastructures from application attacks, today announced FireLine, a new model of its award-winning Teros Secure Application Gateway designed for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and business units within large enterprises. The FireLine appliance provides immediate protection for web applications, and prevents the disclosure of sensitive corporate and customer information which can result in fraud, identity theft, and legal liability. FireLine is designed for companies that lack in-house application security experience and can be installed and configured in less than 60 minutes.
"While SMEs are subject to the same application-layer attacks that plague large enterprises, most need vendors to supply application security systems that are absurdly easy to deploy and manage," said Eric Ogren, Senior Analyst, Security Solutions and Services for leading IT research firm the Yankee Group. "The Teros FireLine appliance makes application security accessible to SMEs by allowing users to define and enforce a security policy without requiring detailed knowledge of each protected application. It is irresponsible not to have an application gateway, such as the Teros FireLine, to protect consumers that interact with web applications."

FireLine enables SMEs to benefit from the same advanced application protection capabilities previously only available to large enterprises with application security expertise. The FireLine appliance can be easily installed and administered by network security managers using a new graphical user interface (GUI) that features a five-step configuration process, pre-defined "best practices" security policies, and the ability to customize security settings at either the global or per-application level. Once defined, a single security policy can be enforced to protect multiple web servers running an unlimited number of web applications.

Immediate Protection from Application Attacks

FireLine can be configured and rolled out in less than 60 minutes. This hardened security appliance installs in front of critical web servers and fully protects all web applications, even complex programs with considerable client-side javascript. FireLine combines Teros Deep Stream Inspection Technology(TM) with a positive security model that enforces correct application behavior to block the most common and damaging application-layer attacks, including:

-- Buffer overflow attacks

-- SQL injection attempts

-- Cross-site scripting exploits

-- Denial of service attacks

-- Web site defacement

In addition, FireLine inspects encrypted communications to detect and block attacks concealed in SSL traffic.

"Although SMEs have the same security requirements and must comply with the same privacy legislations as large enterprises, they often do not have the necessary expertise to adequately secure sensitive data and protect their web applications," said Bob Walters, president and CEO of Teros. "We developed an SME solution that provides faster deployment and out-of-the-box protection for all web applications - at a more affordable price point. FireLine is the first appliance that enables SMEs to acquire a level of application security previously only accessible to larger companies."

Data Theft Prevention

To prevent sensitive data such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and account numbers from being compromised, FireLine detects the presence of protected data types in application responses and can remove or mask the information before it is disclosed. By blocking the unauthorized transmission of sensitive information, FireLine can prevent identity theft and fraud while ensuring SMEs meet the privacy requirements mandated by government regulations including HIPAA, the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, and the California Database Security Breach Notification Act (SB 1386).

Additional Gateway Functionality

In addition to its application security and data theft prevention capabilities, FireLine integrates a bevy of complementary security and networking functions typically provided by single-purpose devices. These capabilities not only increase security, but also improve the performance and availability of web applications. They include:

-- Application cloaking to thwart hacker reconnaissance of target web sites

-- Web input/output acceleration to improve web server performance

-- URL rewriting for hiding internal domain naming

-- Data compression to improve application user experience

-- Central collection of web server logs

Pricing and Availability

FireLine will be available in September from Teros and its channel partners worldwide. Pricing starts at $12,500 USD.
