Maywood NJ Waste: EPA clears Hurdle For Cotter

Laptop Battery The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has lifted a notice of unacceptability for tailings impoundments at Cotter Corp., cracking the door for the uranium mill to receive soils and wastes from other Superfund sites.

Caon City resident Sharyn Cunningham, an opponent of Cotter's plan, said the health department's decision made perfect sense. "If they were approved to take the Maywood dirt, that would mean a change in their business, " said Cunningham, chairwoman of Colorado Citizens Against Toxic Waste, a group that formed in 2002 when Cotter announced plans to bring the dirt to Fremont County. "They shouldn't be able to go about changing their business before they have a license (to do so)."

Thinkpad Stephen Tuber, regional EPA administrator, notified Cotter that its Jan. 3, 2003, notice of unacceptability of the impoundments has been rescinded. The NOUs for the mill buildings are still in effect.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Microsoft Cotter Corp. would still need additional approval from state regulators and the EPA on details of the plan. According to Jerry Powers, Cotter manager of administration, those approvals are a formality.

Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

Laptop Computers "All we have to do is write to the EPA and ask them to find those areas that are acceptable to receive waste," Powers said Monday.

Laptop Computer Cotter, a subsidiary of General Atomics Corp., has sought approval to receive low-level radioactive waste from a mostly defunct industrial complex in Maywood, N.J. The corporation claims the soils are less radioactive than the materials already in the tailings ponds and would provide ideal cover material below a clay cap that would be installed when the mill site is eventually closed and cleaned up.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Desktop Computer Although there are 470,000 tons of thorium-tainted soil earmarked for removal from Maywood, shipments have been ongoing to Envirocare of Utah, and Cotter's impoundments may not have capacity to accept all of the soils. Cotter has asked the state to expand the capacity of the waste ponds from 500,000 cubic yards to 4 million.

Notebooks The status change is based on a ruling that the impoundments now meet the standards of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency's offsite rules, which govern transfer of materials among Superfund sites, according to Marion Galant, community involvement manager of the Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division of the state health department.

Lenovo Critics, most notably Colorado Citizens Against Toxic Waste, contend Cotter hopes to increase revenue by changing its primary mission to "toxic waste dump."

Hard Drive The company announced last month it is gearing up its uranium processing operation and could hire back about 20 of the 85 workers it has laid of in recent years.

Travelstar Cotter still must receive a finding of acceptability from the EPA for its rail spur, three storage pads and its processing circuit before Superfund waste may be taken at the mill.

Gateway The state health department has tied its approval of the Maywood soil project to Cotter's relicensing, which is not expected to be complete until later this year.

Laptop Parts A Superfund meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. May 11 and a licensing meeting 6:30-9:30 p.m. May 20, both at the Quality Inn, 3075 E U.S. 50.
