Laptop Computers Early this week the state Department of Agriculture reported the first case of West Nile virus in a horse this year and federal health officials said later in the week that the mosquito-borne disease had tripled in humans in just a week. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warned that this year's infections may surpass last year's record numbers nationwide.

Desktop Computer Noting that the EEE virus has been detected in New Jersey earlier in the season than ever before, state officials caution that it may pose a greater health threat in the Garden State than West Nile.

Notebooks Rare but serious, EEE causes an inflammation of the brain tissue and has a higher risk of death than a West Nile infection, according to a bulletin issued by the state Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS).

Lenovo "While there is a vaccine for horses, there is no (EEE) vaccine for people, so New Jersey residents must take precautions to protect themselves from infection by mosquito bites," said DHSS Commissioner Clifton R. Lacy.

Hard Drive Bradley Campbell, commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection, said this year's increased rain created favorable habitats for the mosquitoes that carry the EEE virus.

Travelstar "That puts New Jersey residents at increased risk of infection from both West Nile virus and EEE, and we are stepping up mosquito control efforts in response."

Gateway The early symptoms of EEE are the same as those for West Nile virus infection. They include fever, headache and changes in mental status, Lacy said.

Laptop Parts He said people who have those symptoms after being exposed to mosquito bites should consult a physician.

Software Ary Farajollahi, a field biologist with the Mercer County Mosquito Control Office, said recent rains following record-setting rains in June caused county control offices to step up their efforts.

Hard Drives "With all of the rain we've increased surveillance and control. We had a very wet spring and had been addressing it, but now some of the habitats that were treated must be re-treated and we are monitoring for entirely different species of mosquitoes than earlier in the season," Farajollahi said.

Electronics "The guys have been out there treating areas where we know we are going to have West Nile activity based on experience."

Canon He said crews have been concentrating on more heavily populated areas and where conditions exist that could nurture mosquito breeding sites that add to the health threat.

Desktop Pc "We really need the public's help," said Farajollahi. "Things were starting to die down from the early season with the types of mosquitoes that breed just one generation."

Desktop Computers He said that the current cycle has species that in warm weather go through the aquatic stage in about a week and even sooner if the temperatures are hot enough.

Think Pad "We need help with the backyard breeders. Homeowners have to make sure that swimming pools, bird baths, rain gutters or puddles are removed so there is no chance for mosquitoes to breed."

Repair He said the county monitors the number and species of mosquitoes through trapping devices.

Data Recovery There are 11 light traps that are permanently stationed at chosen locations. The dead mosquitoes are counted and identified daily. There are other traps that are moved daily.

Cisco "The number varies. We get some serious numbers some days. It vacillates from day to to day," he said.

Keyboard Bob Kent, administrator for the state Department of Environmental Protection's mosquito coordination, also called for the public's help.

Monitor "The intermittent rainfall between the heat is a perfect recipe for the growing mosquito populations. It just keeps the cycle going," Kent said.

Desktop "The combination of weather and rain keeps the habitat available and refreshed so that previously treated habitats need to be re-treated."

Infosys What prompted the EEE alert was the detection of it in early July in a mosquito pool in Burlington County. It was discovered as part of routine surveillance. The DHSS bulletin said it is a warning that EEE will be found in other areas of the state.

Refurbished Laptops There have been two human cases in Georgia with one fatality, and Illinois has its first case ever. There have been dozens of horse deaths in Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina.

Wipro The largest outbreak of the disease among humans in New Jersey occurred in 1959 when 22 of 32 people stricken with EEE died.

Lap Top Farajollahi and Kent said the tendency of EEE to move up the East Coast is cause for vigilance and added control efforts.

Refurbished The CDC had indicated that EEE may be abnormally active this year. It is a disease that normally cycles through bird populations in the summer and in mosquitoes from late summer to early fall.

Memory Although there is no EEE vaccine for humans, most horse owners heed official recommendations for vaccinations, said Jeff Hamer, a veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture's division of animal health.

Intel Stable owners said the cost of EEE shots is about $20 each. There are two shots close together and than one or two a year, depending on the animal's owner or the veterinarian.

As400 He said vaccinations of any kind for horses are based on good science and good husbandry for a specific animal.

Averatec "But the cost of the vaccination is minimal to the owner, especially if you realize that with EEE, most likely the animal will die or if you take it to an equine treatment center it could cost thousands of dollars," Hamer said.

Hardware Margie Bettyas, owner of Field of Dreams stables in Chesterfield, said all the horses at her operation are vaccinated against EEE, West Nile and other life-threatening diseases.

Dual Xeon "Most horse owners are diligent about vaccinations. EEE is a major concern because it has been a wet season. It's really scary," she said. She places her horses out to pasture at night but keeps them stabled during the day.

Storage "The heat and flies are miserable during the day. They need some relief," she said.

Seagate "When they came out with the vaccine for West Nile, I went for it right away," Bettyas said. "Normally, I don't like to use a new vaccine that quickly on my horses. I want to make sure there are no side effects. But given the situation, it didn't make sense not to get the vaccine."

Computer Sales Her stable is equipped with automatic troughs that leave a minimal amount of water residue and are cleaned daily.

Computer Hardware Nina Benninghoff, owner of Holly Tree Dressage Center in Shamong Township, said most stable operators police their own properties, eliminating mosquito breeding sites. She said the troughs used for her 59 horses are emptied and cleaned with bleach daily as a preventive measure.

Printers She praised the state's efforts in fighting mosquitoes. "I've seen their helicopters up there at least twice a month."

Technology Benninghoff said spraying by the state has helped "immensely" in keeping the mosquito population down in the Pinelands area, but she still keeps her horses stabled at night to minimize exposure to the insects.

Mainframe Last year, 47 horses were diagnosed with West Nile in New Jersey. Twelve were euthanized or died. Nineteen states have reported a total of 60 horses with West Nile so far this year.

Samsung Last year, 25 New Jersey residents contracted West Nile, twice as many as in 2001. The first case in Bucks County, Pa., this year was an unidentified 39-year-old man who recovered and was discharged from a hospital early this week.
