AOL Launches Link2PC Services Giving Users Anywhere Access To Their Personal Computers
New Premium Service Allows Consumers, Business Executives to Access Remote Documents, Programs Via Secure WebEx Connection from Any PC
Affordable Link2PC Service Available to Everyone -- AOL Members and Non-Members
DULLES, VA -- March 14, 2006 - AOL today launched Link2PC, an affordable premium service allowing users to remotely access and use their personal computer from any Internet-connected PC. Designed for simple use by consumers and business executives alike, Link2PC creates a virtual desktop through the Web that mirrors the view of the desktop on the user's own machine. The user can interact with the virtual desktop as if they were sitting at their own computer to use programs; open and edit documents; or access, share and print files. Strong encryption and two-level password validation help protect users' security, and users can choose which programs they wish to share with-or keep private from-remote access.
"Link2PC untethers the desktop computer, and it does so in a simple and secure manner" said Ed Fish, Senior Vice President and GM, AOL Premium and Subscription Services. "Traditionally these kinds of products were developed solely for 'road warrior' business travelers, and many required an instruction manual to operate. In the last year, we've seen a strong desire by mainstream consumers, small office/home office users, and traditional business travelers to use this kind of functionality. Consumers may need to access a presentation they left at work, share photos saved on their home PC, or find information from their address book or calendar. Business executives can access all of the documents and programs from their work computer without lugging around a heavy laptop and lots of cables."
The affordable Link2PC service is available to both AOL members and non-members and is powered by WebEx Communications and its secure MediaTone Network. Link2PC costs $6.95 per month for up to two host computers.
After registration, Link2PC users download a small program on up to two computers they wish to share. From any other PC, the user simply visits the Link2PC.com web site to create a virtual desktop of their shared computer(s) via an encrypted, password-protected connection.
Through Link2PC, users can:
* View, edit, and share files with password-protected access and leading encryption
* Enjoy full access to programs and files like email, photos, contacts and calendar
* Access the remote computer and files without additional hardware or device * Use favorite programs for word processing, calendar, organization, presentation, graphics, design, photo editing, and more
* Print to any local computer without having to install any applications or print drivers
"Users told us that they wanted the simplicity, usability, and affordability of consumer software coupled with enterprise-grade network management and security, and that's exactly what we worked with WebEx to create," continued Fish. "With Link2PC, users never have to worry about forgetting a file, needing a program from another computer, or printing a distant document. Whether they are working from home, accessing a home computer from work, or traveling for business or pleasure, Link2PC enables the mobile lifestyle of today's users."
For security, Link2PC provides 128-bit end-to-end encryption through the WebEx MediaTone Network, a secure global network specifically designed for real-time delivery of on-demand applications. Link2PC uses two-level authentication of both the password and a unique access code for each computer, and it offers security controls that allow users to lock the keyboard or hide the screen of computers being accessed.
