Thinkpad (AXcess News) Reno - A variant of the Sober worm is set to launch in January, according to F-Search, an Helsinki-based security firm that posted an alert to the Sober worm variant's launch date in its security blog.
laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)
Microsoft The Sober worm was first discovered by F-Search in October, 2003 and since they say over 20 variants of the sober worm have been launched.
A new Sober variant has been found in the wild in several countries. Sober.P is an email worm sending variable messages in English and German. Historically, Sober variants have often made a pretty big hit.
Laptop Computers The Sober worm was one of the most widely distributed viruses this year, responsible for as much as 40 percent of the infections spread across computer hard-drives. The sober worm is suspected of originating from one hacker that F-Search believes is in Germany.

Laptop Computer Most of these Sober worm variants contain a routine that activates the virus at later date. After this the virus will try to periodically download and run a file from several websites. This is the way most new Sober variants are distributed: the author uploads a new version and all the infected machines will suddenly get infected with the new variant, F-Search said.
This is a variant of the Sdbot worm that spreads via the Internet by attacking random IP addresses. These variants will attempt to exploit the several vulnerabilities in Windows OS. If they succeed in downing so, they will create and run a scipt which will download a worm via ftp to your computer. According to Panda, Sdbot.ftp is difficult to recognize, as it does not display any messages or warnings that indicate it has reached the computer.
Desktop Computer iDefense, a division of VeriSign, reported Wednesday that a variant of the Sober worm is timed with the Nazi Party's 87th anniversary and will begin spreading itself on January 5th.
Notebooks The next Sober varient's attack, iDefense said, is based on commands hard codedwithin the Sober worm.
Lenovo In addition to the Nazi party anniversary, the Jan. 5 trigger on the Sober variant appears to also be timed to coincide with a major German political convention meeting the next day, Jan. 6. In the past, iDefense has seen mass distribution of propaganda timed with political events to increase the worm's notoriety, and help to further circulate it.
Hard Drive "This discovery emphasizes the ever-present and often underestimated threat of 'hacktivism' - combining malicious code with political causes," said Joe Payne, Vice President, VeriSign iDefense Security Intelligence Services. "Exposing this latest variant required technical and geopolitical analysis that connected the dots to give enterprises and home users plenty of time to shore up their defenses."
Travelstar iDefense says they've discovered 30 variants of the of the Sober worm since October 2003, 10 more than F-Secure and they too say the hacker that created it is most likely in Germany.
Gateway Sober is also a bilingual worm, sending German-language messages to German e-mail addresses, and English-language messages to other addresses.
Laptop Parts iDefense discovered the next phase of the multi-phased Sober attack by reverse engineering and breaking encrypted code in the most recent Sober variant. This variant first began spreading through the Internet on or about Nov. 16, 2005. The computers infected by the Nov. 16 variant began sending another version on Nov. 22, 2005, a date that coincided with the inauguration of Germany's first female chancellor - to additional computers posing as e-mails from the FBI, the UK National High-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU), German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) and the CIA.
Software AXcess News reported on the fake FBI and CIA e-mails when it was first discovered. Another variant was reported on by AXcess News in early December that was infecting computers through Yahoo! Messenger. Surprisingly, neither iDefense nor F-Secure reported on the Yahoo! Messenger Sober-Z variant.
Hard Drives This Nov. 22 variant is designed to download an unknown payload of code on Jan. 5, 2006. iDefense intelligence experts report that this particular variant has already infected millions of systems as a prelude to the Jan. 5 attack, scanning computers' address books to send hundreds of millions of messages claiming to be from various government entities.
