No Plague, But Maybe Grasshopper Will Abound

Laptop Battery A Northfield homeowner recently noticed his flowers being eaten up by grasshoppers, and stuck to his trees were the empty skins of large bugs. So he asked whether it was possible, in this year of the Mormon cricket plague out West, whether we're in for a year of locusts, maybe next year.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad Well, the good news is that locusts are one biblical plague that won't be visited upon southern New Jersey by nature. (Divine intervention is another matter.)

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers One confusion we need to clear up first is between locusts, grasshoppers and cicadas.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer So what we once called a Carolina locust - a 1.5-to-2-inch-long grasshopper with black hindwings, we should call a Carolina grasshopper.

Notebooks And the 17-year locust is more properly called a 17-year periodical cicada.

Lenovo Our main grasshoppers, the Carolina and the red-legged, will eat plants, but they aren't subject to the kind of massive outbreaks that result in widespread stripped vegetation or human disgust.

Hard Drive Rick Van Vranken, agricultural agent for the Rutgers Cooperative Extension in Atlantic County, said he has never heard about grasshoppers swarming over an entire community in our region.

Travelstar "Occasionally, I'll get calls from farmers saying they're having trouble controlling grasshoppers, but not this year," he said last week. "I can't remember the last call."

Gateway The pest control office of the state Department of Agriculture also reported no significant grasshopper outbreaks this year.

Laptop Parts But next year we will see large numbers of insects that made their last appearance in 1987 - brood No. 1 of the 17-year periodical cicada.

Software Cicadas are insects that spend years as nymphs feeding on plant roots underground, then emerge for a month or so, leaving empty skins on trees as they grow and molt. They "sing" (more like buzzing really) during the hot days of summer, mate, lay eggs and die.

Hard Drives The 2-inch long dog day cicada spends a few years underground and is with us every year, but the 1-to-1.5-inch-long periodical cicada spends 17 years below and then emerges in large numbers.

Electronics When brood No. 1 of our periodical cicadas last emerged in 1987, it overran Princeton, horrifying the gentile folk of that town.

Canon In our region, brood No. 2 is considered the bigger group of periodical cicadas. It is not due back until 2013.

Desktop Pc Still, if you are seeing some periodical cicadas this year, it might be prudent to expect to see more, maybe many more, next year.

Desktop Computers For those of us with natural habitat yards, it is just something to keep an eye out for and enjoy.

Think Pad But if you have expensive, leafy shrubs that you would prefer were not eaten by cicadas next year, then next spring you might want to wrap them in fine-meshed netting, tying it tightly at the base of the shrub.

Repair And that is about as close as we will come to a plague of locusts.
