Pete Thomas A popular mate on the San Diego long-range boat, Royal Polaris, lost his life on February 4 when a homemade explosive device detonated prematurely while he was holding it. James "Rollo" Heyn was considered one of the best mates working the long-range fleet, and many anglers fished the Royal Polaris because of his presence on board.
Laptop Battery According to a Coast Guard investigator, Heyn was killed while playing with explosives made from ammonium nitrate and high-octane fuel while voyaging home from a long-range fishing trip in Mexican waters. Heyn was acting as second in command at the time of the accident, which occurred about three days from their home port in San Diego.
