7. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 and watch your stockinette stitches become a cabled rope. When you work cables, you go back and forth from purl stitches to knit stitches. From a knit to a purl stitch, bring your yarn between the needles to the front before you make the next stitch. From a purl to a knit stitch, bring your yarn between the needles to the back before you make the next stitch. laptop battery

Checking gauge in a cable pattern

The combination of knit panels with purl panels (think ribs) and crossing stitches over stitches causes cable patterns to pull in widthwise. A sweater worked in a cable pattern will be significantly narrower than one worked in the same number of stitches in stockinette stitch. You ll need more yarn and more stitches for a cable sweater than for one of the same dimensions in a knit/purl pattern. thinkpad

If you decide to add a cable (or several) to a plain sweater, be sure to increase enough stitches after you knit your border to maintain the overall width. Although there are no hard and fast rules, you ll be safe if you add 1 to 2 for every 4 stitches in your cable. If you have a ribbed border, you can add the stitches evenly on the last ribbed row. microsoft

If you re making a project in a repeating cable pattern, be sure to work a large enough swatch to be able to measure gauge accurately. The swatch should include at least two repeats of the cable pattern horizontally and vertically. If you re working several different cables, you have to check your gauge over each one. laptop computers

Feel like you re wasting time making swatches to check gauge Make two gauge swatches and sew them together for a cabled pillow or bag. laptop computer

Starting and stopping

Cables should begin and end on a row between turnings where the cable stitches are relaxed and the fabric is smooth. Because the cable stitches spread out a bit between turning rows, for the smoothest transition between the beginnings and endings of cables, plan to increase a stitch or two over the cable stitches when beginning a cable and decrease a stitch or two when binding off over a cable. desktop computer

To start a cable pattern

If you re adding a cable(s) to an uncabled sweater pattern, for every 4 stitches in the planned cable(s), add 1 or 2 stitches to the number of stitches to cast on. Then work a few rows in the knit/purl pattern you ve established for your cables before working a turning row. notebooks

To end a cable pattern

When you re binding off cables, decrease across the top of the cable 1 or 2 stitches for every 4 stitches in the cable to prevent the bound-off edge from flaring out. Follow these steps for a neat finish: lenovo

1. Bind off the background stitches as they present themselves (knit the knits and purl the purls as you bind off) until you reach the cabled stitches. 2. When you get to the cable stitches, bind off as follows: *k1, bind off, k2tog, bind off, k1, bind off; rep from * to the end of the cable (stockinette) stitches. 3. After binding off the cable stitches, go back to binding off the stitches of the background as they present themselves. hard drive

Sweet Corn Cr pes - For Dummies Desserts For Dummies Sweet Corn Cr pes Adapted From: Desserts For Dummies Printer-ready version

These sweet cr pes have dozens of uses. Serve with ice cream, fruit, dessert sauces like cr me anglaise, or even sweet yogurt. You can use a half-and-half mix of corn flour, which gives this dessert an earthy texture, and cake flour, which keeps the cr pes exceptionally light. You also can substitute cornmeal for the corn flour. These corn cr pes are ideal when served with a warm fruit compote. travelstar

Sweet Corn Cr pes Tools: Sieve, 8-inch cr pe pan or 8-inch nonstick fry pan, pastry brush, ladle Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Yield: About 20 cr pes

1/2 cup (2 ounces) cake flour 1/2 cup (2 ounces) corn flour or cornmeal gateway

6 tablespoons sugar pinch of salt 1 cup (8 ounces) skim milk or soy milk 3 egg whites 3 tablespoons safflower or corn oil zest of 1 lemon (1 tablespoon) 2 tablespoons Cointreau, or other orange-flavored liqueur (optional) vegetable oil, for greasing the pan 1. In a bowl, sift together the cake flour, corn flour, 3 tablespoons sugar, and salt. 2. While mixing (by hand with a whisk is best), slowly add the milk. Then whisk in the egg whites, followed by the safflower or corn oil. (If lumps appear in the batter, try to break them up with a whisk if you can t, press the batter through a sieve with a rubber spatula.) When the batter is smooth, add the lemon zest and Cointreau (optional). The batter should be thin. laptop parts

3. Prepare a cr pe pan or an 8-inch nonstick fry pan by brushing it with vegetable oil. 4. Heat the cr pe pan over medium setting for about a minute. 5. Ladle some batter onto the middle of the pan and immediately start swirling the pan to distribute the batter over the surface. All the while, keep the ladle over the center of the pan as the remaining batter pours out you want the batter to always land in the center of the pan for even distribution. Pour the batter so that it s very thin on the pan. Remember to move the pan, not the ladle. 6. Cook the cr pe for about 30 seconds, or until it s brown around the edge and dry in the center. Using a thin spatula, flip the cr pe quickly and cook for about 15 seconds. Remove the cr pe to a warm plate. Sprinkle the cr pe with the remaining sugar. 7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the remaining batter. Before dipping your ladle into the batter to make another cr pe, remember to stir up the corn flour that sinks to the bottom of the bowl.

After making the first few cr pes, you shouldn t have to add more oil to the pan. Be careful not to let the pan get too hot it will sizzle too much, and the batter will cook immediately upon hitting the pan rather than swirl around. software

Seasoning When You Want Less Salt - For Dummies Low-Cholesterol Cookbook For Dummies Seasoning When You Want Less Salt Adapted From: Low-Cholesterol Cookbook For Dummies Printer-ready version

Heart-healthy diets that restrict cholesterol usually also include a recommendation to limit sodium intake. If you re salt-sensitive and have high blood pressure, your physician has probably recommended cutting back on salt. This advice probably sounded like a sentence to a lifetime of eating bland food, but it needn t be. As you cut back on salt, your taste buds will adjust to this change and soon you ll find lightly salted foods salty enough. computer hardware

You can bring out the flavor of food with substances other than salt. Adding fresh lemon or lime juice or a dash of vinegar can enhance flavors. Strong herbs and spices, such as garlic, ginger, cayenne, and hot pepper sauce, can also eliminate the need for salt. Or make up some herb and spice mixtures with complex flavors that will keep your mind off the missing salt. printers

Another way to cut back on salt in your diet is to stay away from seasoned salts, pickle condiments, and salty commercial sauces. Here are some likely suspects: technology

Doing the herb shuffle

Herbs are the leaves and soft stems of plants. You can buy them fresh, sold in the produce department of most markets. You can also maintain a supply of fresh herbs by growing them at home. Plant nurseries carry an assortment of these, which change with the season. Often a pot containing a living plant doesn t cost much more than a meager package of fresh herbs at the store. Just set the pot in your kitchen window and harvest a continuing supply. hosting

When shopping for fresh herbs, select those with a healthy green color and avoid those that are limp and yellowing. An herb should have a clean scent. Your other option is to buy dried herbs, which come whole, flaked, ground, or powdered. They re widely available and easy to measure and require no trimming. The main concern about dried herbs is whether they are old and stale. The flavor in dried herbs comes from their essential oils, which lose their strength and character when exposed to air, heat, and light. netfinity

Buy the dried herbs that are packaged in airtight jars rather than those that come in cellophane bags, which can let in air. To cook with herbs, start out simple by adding just a single herb to a recipe you re preparing, for example basil in tomato sauce or sage in a turkey pot pie. Often one extra flavor note is all you need to elevate an ordinary dish to something special. Certain herbs are best with certain foods. Stepping out with spices

Spices are aromatic or pungent seasonings that come from the bark (cinnamon), the buds (capers), the berries (vanilla), the roots (ginger), the stigmas of flowers (saffron), and the seeds (coriander) of plants. They are always sold dried. Spices are at the heart of such culinary classics as Indian curry, Mexican mole sauce (which also includes chocolate), Chinese Szechwan dishes, and American pumpkin pie. For best results, cook with the freshest, highest quality spices. hitachi

Several spices are good for heart health. Ginger thins the blood and enhances circulation. In an animal study conducted in India, ginger was shown to lower cholesterol by stimulating the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids. Announcing Your Image via Letterhead and Envelopes - For Dummies Marketing Kit for Dummies, 2nd Edition Announcing Your Image via Letterhead and Envelopes Adapted From: Marketing Kit for Dummies, 2nd Edition Printer-ready version

Letterhead and envelopes may be the first encounter someone has with your business, and first impressions are obviously important. But even if customers have done business with you for some time, the look and feel of your stationery has a subtle but powerful impact on their attitude toward you. Good letterhead can help retain a customer or stimulate a referral. So, like with business cards, letterhead is a surprisingly important marketing investment. Make sure you have a clean, impressive design that impresses customers favorably. panasonic

And don t overlook the importance of an envelope design that calls out to be opened. Important prospects get too much mail. Why should they pay any special attention to your envelope Because it appears professional, impressive, and looks more interesting and useful to them than the average junk mail they receive. Or does it Better take a cold, hard look at your envelopes and see whether they re up to the challenge! workstation

Conveying your image through paper and print

If you re a stockbroker or a business consultant, you may want to have an established, conservative look for your design, ink, and paper selections. Communicating a sense of stability and longevity can be important in these fields. What sorts of type, ink color, and paper say this the best Perhaps Times Roman lettering, centered in a traditional style at the head of the paper, printed in conservative black ink on an old-fashioned creamy paper with some cotton fiber in it, also containing a watermark. Such a paper is more expensive than lighter, more modern papers but is consistent with a conservative, solid, sophisticated image. (Make sure you order blank sheets, too, to use for second pages because a regular piece of white paper doesn t match.) iseries

What should an art therapist choose for stationery Well, an art therapist needs to select an image that s both playful and supportive soft, reassuring, but a bit artistic and fun, too. How about a full-color rainbow as the logo, which brings in the artist s palette but also evokes thoughts of calmness, good fortune, and healing (because rainbows come after storms) As for paper, perhaps an attractive, soft, woven paper, again in a conservative off-white or creamy color, but perhaps this time with some little flecks of color in it backup

You need to project a clear, strong personality each and every time you present your business. Capture and convey your brand personality in your letterhead, envelopes, and business cards. Even if you don t work with an expensive designer, take the time to explore many options and make a thoughtful selection of paper, ink, type, and logo (if you use one). Extra care and a little extra investment here go a lot further than most people realize to help make sales and marketing successful. information technology

Here s an idea you can act on easily, with or without a designer s help. Go to a larger print shop and select a distinctive paper for your business. Something that you feel has a unique, appropriate, and appealing look and feel to it. Then order letterhead, business cards, envelopes, and even labels all on this distinctive paper. This subtle design element can boost the image and appeal of a business. routers

Getting your message across through faxes and e-mails

Many businesses use decent letterhead but send faxes using a generic cover sheet with designs (please avoid the templates in Word!). Other businesses improvise and use a blank sheet of paper to create inconsistent and unprofessional looking faxes. 180gxp

You can simply use your letterhead for faxes, centering the header FAX MEMO at the top of the page, with the date centered in smaller type below it. Then use the standard memo format of left-justified To:, From:, and Re: lines, including both the name of the person the fax is to and her fax number. At the bottom, beneath your signature, provide your own fax number if the contact address on your letterhead doesn t include it. You can also say in a Note at the bottom, 3 more pages to come or whatever, to make sure she receives all the pages you send. notebook battery
