RUMOR: DS To Feature Wireless Gaming; Messaging

In what would be a new, and unusual move for Nintendo, the Dual Screen, set to release later this year, may feature wireless gaming and wireless instant messaging, according to a report from P. J. McNealy of the American Technology Research Group.

The wireless instant messaging service would not be like the services found on modern cellular phones. Instead of being worldwide or nationwide, the instant messaging would be local and limited in range, but free. Using the unlicensed RF spectrum, users could send messages to each other, which would be written or typed out on a touch screen using a stylus.

McNealy's report also says that the Dual Screen will feature wireless gaming. This could allow players in the same room, or within a certain range to play together without needing a link cable or other cord/cable. In addition, if the recent reports that Sony has dropped wireless from the PSP are true, then Nintendo would have a technological advantage in the handheld gaming wars. It could also be possible for the Dual Screen to wirelessly connect to the N5, much like the Game Boy Advance connects to the GameCube currently.

McNealy's report also states that "several industry sources," are saying that the Dual Screen will have a design similar to the design of the GBA SP. "The form factor will feature two three-inch screens that fold together, similar to that of the Game Boy Advance. There will be two flipper controls, two directional pads, and an 'a' and 'b' button. The stylus will be used for gaming, Instant Messaging, and other multimedia functionalities," wrote McNealy.
