The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) believes the pay-to-send model could leave nonprofits, small businesses, and other groups with increasingly unreliable service.

Laptop Computer Goodmail argues thatits CertifiedEmail service offers ESPs "a level of security against phishing and email-based fraud, while also providing corporate senders a means of protecting the integrity of their brands. Consumers receiving CertifiedEmail can feel safer in acting on these received messages, while senders can achieve higher delivery and open rates." But according to EFF, its anything but safe.

However, in a pointed example of how ISP control of your inbox can go wrong, last month AOL silently started dropping email that even mentioned DearAOL.com. After EFF publicized the problem, AOL quickly rectified the situation.
