Treasures From the Wrecks:South Florida's Sunken Fleet

Staff Florida takes the trophy for the most artificial reefs of any state, having sunk more than 300. Nearly half are in south Florida: Broward County, with almost 80, sank its first one in 1967 off Dania Beach; Palm Beach County has more than 30; and Miami-Dade County boasts over 40. The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo, one of south Florida's largest fishing tournaments with more than 700 anglers and 200 boats, has contributed more than $400,000 since 1984 to help sink 25 artificial reefs off Pompano Beach. Those reefs, which range in size from 30 to 435 feet, lie in depths from 78 to 414 feet.
Laptop Battery Funding for Broward's reefs also comes from the Broward County Department of Natural Resources, which oversees the county's artificial reef program; the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which provides saltwater fishing license monies; and the Florida Boating Improvement Program, funded by annual boater registration fees. Besides the cost of acquiring a derelict vessel, money goes toward cleaning and preparing the vessel for sinking. In some cases, fuel and hazardous materials must first be removed. It can be an expensive proposition, with the last reef that the Rodeo helped sink in 1997 costing $120,000 - about double from just a few years earlier. "Boats suitable for artificial reefs are at a premium," says Rodeo executive director Patti Carr. "As more and more counties sink reefs, a bidding war for boats takes place."
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Thinkpad But the winning bidders get their money's worth. According to a University of Florida study, an artificial reef has an annual economic impact of $125,000, with most of that money being spent by recreational anglers and divers. According to Carr, the ships sunk by the Rodeo have a life span of at least 100 years, which makes those numbers even more impressive.
