Microsoft's Office Challenged by Google and Sun

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Microsoft The deal calls for Google to distribute Sun's OpenOffice.org software for personal computers, the companies said at a press conference in Mountain View, California today.

Laptop Computer The companies didn't say how Google will deliver the programs, or whether or when they will be available on Google's sites.

Hard Drive Speculation has it that Google will incorporate a link in its Google Tool Bar to Sun Microsystems OpenOffice.org software. At the news conference Schmidt said that "Google could add tens of millions of customers through Sun's downloads. That will help Google monetize its toolbar by selling more advertising."

Travelstar OpenOffice.org is an open-source product that is compatible with all major office products. It is free to download, use and distribute, according to its Web site.

Gateway Schwartzbelieves the alliancecould helpspur revenue growth. Sun hasn't increased sales or posted an annual profit in the past four fiscal years.

Laptop Parts Sun released its latest paid version of the OpenOffice.org program, called StarOffice 8, on Sept. 27. StarOffice 8 retails for $69.95. Microsoft Office charges $99.95 for its basic software suite, which accounted for 28 percent of its sales and $7.92 billion, or 54 percent, of its profists last year.
