A Silent Epidemic

Laptop Battery The cost of not treating asthma right ... drives insurance costs higher because in the shared burden of health-care costs, hospital care is so much more expensive than inhalers. It drives state taxes up, because taxpayers foot the bill for Medicaid, the insurance program for the poor. Despite its lower visibility, asthma is a bigger drain on hospitals than AIDS.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers Yes, most people can name a friend or relative who has to rely on an inhaler to help them breathe on poor-air-quality days, but how many realize just how high the toll really is? And how many realize that despite all the medical advances, the toll just keeps climbing?

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer The toll can be measured in all sorts of ways, and in every instance it is huge. In sheer numbers, asthma has climbed by 75 percent since 1980, to 20 million people. Asthma kills 4,500 Americans a year. By one estimate, the cost of the disease in terms of drugs, emergency-room visits, missed workdays, and hospitalizations is $13 billion a year nationwide.

Desktop Computer But asthma is at its most pernicious when it attacks children, some so young they don't know why they are gasping for air. In the city of Passaic, one in five schoolchildren suffers from asthma - or three times the national average.

Notebooks Last year, University of Southern California researchers completed an 11-year study that found children living in polluted areas pay a price every time they breathe. Their lungs develop more slowly, and their breathing is less efficient. Perhaps most troubling, the study found that the kids who played outside the most - the healthy kids, the ones who weren't couch potatoes - increased their chances of developing asthma.

Lenovo The long-term implications of the disease are more subtle. As one Paterson elementary school principal explained, many students start the day exhausted because they spend sleepless nights at home struggling for air: "I know it holds them back."

Hard Drive Asthma is affecting children in New Jersey's suburbs and outlying communities as well. Because of better access to health care, it's not as acute. But it's just as prevalent - to the point where school nurses are increasingly considered essential on field trips because so many kids are afflicted.

Travelstar Air pollution - much of it from out of state - is a leading cause of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Nonetheless, schools and families here in New Jersey need to play a greater role in both prevention and treatment of childhood asthma.

Gateway Schools, for example, must be free of dust, pests, and mold - all of which can help trigger respiratory problems. Schools should also be using the federal Environmental Protection Agency's "Tools for Schools" program, which provides plenty of advice about keeping schools asthma-free.

Laptop Parts When The Record asked school nurses what they would do first to help asthmatic kids, they all had the same answer: Air-condition all school buildings. With the billions of dollars being spent on school construction statewide right now, asthma prevention should be a priority for those overseeing the construction.

Software As for what families can do, it boils down to a question of handling the disease better. And that begins with educating everyone about the simplest basic steps they should take - including getting flu shots, putting dust mite covers on mattresses and pillows, and ridding their homes of roaches, pet dander, and cigarette smoke.

Hard Drives In most cases, regular daily medication is also crucial, but millions of New Jerseyans don't have coverage for prescription drugs, and many of those with coverage don't get the medication they need.

Electronics In poorer areas, providing more children with health coverage would help, so long as doctors come up with individualized action plans for students with asthma. School nurses say that too many asthmatic students never get these plans, which give the kids and their parents specific advice in such areas as taking allergy medications, reducing the environmental triggers, and using inhalers daily, whether they have trouble breathing or not.

Canon Because asthma is a silent epidemic, far too few New Jerseyans know how to minimize its impact on their own families. That's why The Record's series this week should be required reading.
