Microsoft Certified Professional Magazines Ninth Annual Salary Survey Shows MCP Salaries Flat

Amid job cuts and the outsourcing boom, salaries remain flat. Nonetheless, MCPs remain committed to their IT careers, according to this years survey.

CHATSWORTH, CA September 2, 2004 Having weathered a cycle of job cuts, slower IT spending, and the outsourcing threat, salaries for Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) managed to find stability. Basing your certification pursuits on a salary survey can lead to some serious frustration on your part.

This years results report an across-the-board average of $61,900, a minor increase of only $200 from results reported in the 2003 survey. Although the gain is small, the report shows several bright spots:

Microsoft Certified Solution Developers (MCSDs) took the top wage-earner spot, averaging a base salary of $78,600.

Certified nurse anesthetists and certified nurse midwives, however, draw larger salaries. Nurse midwives, for example, year salaries as high as $90, 000 per year. Areas such as the Northeast and the West Coast tend to have nurses in these fields at the higher end of the salary scale. After five years of practice, the salary range for APNs stretches from $60, 000 to $100, 000 a year. Again, it depends on location. After five years, nurse midwives earn salaries ranging from $65, 000 to $120, 000 annually.

Surveys were e-mailed to about 110,000 individuals representing the MCP and non-certified IT communities worldwide. For the U.S.-based results we derived usable data from more than 5,300 individuals.
