Microsoft Certified Professional Magazines Ninth Annual Salary Survey Shows MCP Salaries Flat
Amid job cuts and the outsourcing boom, salaries remain flat. Nonetheless, MCPs remain committed to their IT careers, according to this years survey.
CHATSWORTH, CA September 2, 2004 Having weathered a cycle of job cuts, slower IT spending, and the outsourcing threat, salaries for Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) managed to find stability. Still, the wins were minimal. This, according to the 2004 Salary Survey, an annual survey of nation-wide MCP compensation.

This years results report an across-the-board average of $61,900, a minor increase of only $200 from results reported in the 2003 survey. Although the gain is small, the report shows several bright spots:

Pharmacists working in chain drug stores had an average base salary of about $62, 300 a year, while pharmacists working in independent drug stores averaged about $56, 300, and hospital pharmacists averaged about $59, 500 a year. Overall, salaries for pharmacists were highest on the West coast. Many pharmacists also receive compensation in the form of bonuses, overtime, sharing.

Microsoft Certified Solution Developers (MCSDs) took the top wage-earner spot, averaging a base salary of $78,600.
Certified nurse anesthetists and certified nurse midwives, however, draw larger salaries. Nurse midwives, for example, year salaries as high as $90, 000 per year. Areas such as the Northeast and the West Coast tend to have nurses in these fields at the higher end of the salary scale. After five years of practice, the salary range for APNs stretches from $60, 000 to $100, 000 a year. Again, it depends on location. After five years, nurse midwives earn salaries ranging from $65, 000 to $120, 000 annually.

Many MCPs, 51 percent believed their compensation increased due to certification.

Despite a looming threat, many MCPs remained employed in the last 12 months: only 9.5 percent reported that they joined the unemployment line and, of those, 65.9 percent were rehired or found a new job.

This survey was developed by Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine and further designed, programmed and rendered into a Web-based survey by Wilson Research Group of San Carlos, California. Surveys were e-mailed to about 110,000 individuals representing the MCP and non-certified IT communities worldwide. For the U.S.-based results we derived usable data from more than 5,300 individuals. The survey measures compensation information by certification title, job title, years of experience, age, type of client, type of industry, region, and much more.
