Nortel Networks Unveils Wireless Access Technology for Cable Operators
Positions Cable Operators to Address New Market Opportunities by Extending High-Speed Data Services to Small, Medium Enterprises
ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 2004--
Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) today introduced Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220, a wireless access solution that offers cable operators a low-cost alternative for extending the reach of high-speed data services to small and medium enterprises. Using industry-standard 802.11 wireless technology, Nortel Networks Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220 will connect business customers to the cable operator's broadband network.
This new product is a strand-mounted enclosure containing both coaxial-fed cable modem and Wireless LAN (local area network) functionality, allowing a cable operator to point an antenna at a building to deliver secure commercial broadband services. Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220 is designed to be easy to deploy and provision in 'hot spot' service mode, allowing cable operators to cost-effectively provide public or private wireless Internet zones.
"Nortel Networks worked closely with our MSO customers to develop this exciting, revenue-generating wireless solution," said Dan Mondor, general manager, Global Cable Solutions, Nortel Networks. "The Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220 is uniquely focused on enabling the cable operator to cost effectively reach businesses and end users."
Nortel Networks Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220 consists of three elements: a strand-mounted Access Point Enclosure with integrated cable modem; a corporate services unit that receives wireless signals from the Enclosure; and either directional or omni directional antennas. Wireless LAN Cable Access Point 6220 will be commercially available in July 2004.
Nortel Networks solutions are designed to help cable operators drive new revenue opportunities and reduced operating costs. Nortel Networks comprehensive, integrated cable solutions span video and video on-demand, voice and multimedia communications, high-speed data services, managed network services for business customers, and next generation access.
Nortel Networks continues to execute on its three commitments to the cable service provider market: new product development geared specifically to cable applications; commitment to the technology and standards organizations that serve the cable industry; and implementing real-world solutions that address the fundamental business and networking challenges of cable operators.
