Avian Flu Shown to Infect Cats

Normally the avian bird flu viruses do not affect humans but since 1997 (when the first case of avian bird flu among humans appeared in Hong Kong), this kind of flu has infected and killed several humans in the South East Asian countries. While WHO does not recommend avoiding travels to these countries, it does advice staying away from live animal markets and poultry farms. This is because the droppings of infected birds generally carry large quantities of the virus.

Avian bird flu on the other hand is a form of flu that was originally believed to infect birds only, but turned up among humans in Hong Kong in 1997. Avian bird flu can affect humans, but only when they come in close contact with live infected birds and manage to inhale the virus. fever, malaise, sore throats and coughs.

Microsoft Sept 3, 2004 (AXcess News) Washington - A deadly strain of avian influenza is starting to emerge in Asia, alarming international public health officials who say there is no vaccine for the disease. Their fear is compounded by the discovery reported this week in the journal Science that cats can become ill with the flu. Cats could provide another souce of viral illness, making it much harder to contain a human influenza outbreak.

3. Is there a treatment for bird flu Professionals currently researching the Avian bird flu claim that rimantidine and amantidine, two cheap and popular flu drugs, have no power over the bird flu, but Relenza and Tamiflu, two other flu drugs, can indeed effectively treat the viral disease. 4. Is there a risk of a bird flu epidemic Experts in this area suggest that rapid and extensive culling and quarantining of potentially infected animals is the best way to prevent an epidemic. Another option is vaccination of birds against the bird flu virus.

Laptop Computers International public health officials are bracing for what they fear may be a global influenza pandemic which they say could lead to widespread illness and death, and for which there is, as yet, no vaccine.

1. What is bird flu Avian influenza, or bird flu, is a contagious disease that affects chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other birds. Bird flu was first detected over 100 years ago and nowadays comes in a variety of about 20 strains. Most recently, outbreaks of the viral disease have been caused by the H5N1 strain, which is a particularly deadly strain of the virus. 2. Can I be infected with bird flu The H5N1 strain of the flu, also called the Asian bird flu because it recently was detected in Asia, has a small risk level for human beings because it cannot be transmitted from one human being to another. A human being can only be infected from direct contact with a sick animal. It is possible that this could change and that the strain could evolve into a virus that can be transferred from one human to another. But this is not the case now.

Laptop Computer The problem is an aggressive A strain of the avian flu virus, which originates in Asia in birds and is passed to humans through live poultry usually bought at market for consumption. Pigs can also harbor the virus and pass it to humans.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Desktop Computer Virologist Thijs Kuiken of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherlands says researchers have now discovered another source of the avian flu virus: cats. "It's another potentional host, yes," he said.

Notebooks Scientists had long suspected cats could harbor the avian flu but they hadn't been able to prove it.

Lenovo In the latest study, researchers fed six cats with baby chicks infected with a sample of a virus taken from someone in Viet Nam who died of avian flu. Within days, the cats became ill with severe respiratory infection. They then passed the disease on to two healthy cats kept in close quarters.Advertisement

Hard Drive Dr. Kuiken doesn't think house cats are much cause for concern. Instead, he worries about farm cats establishing a new source of infection.

Travelstar "Cats could form an opportunity for the virus to adapt itself to mammals, and that could increase the possibility of a human influenza pandemic occurring," he noted.

Gateway The World Health Organization (WHO) is on high alert after receiving recent reports of sporadic deaths caused by the avian flu.

Laptop Parts Klaus Stohrer of the WHO says virologists need to broaden their investigation into the sources of the illness.

Software "Now, what we don't know, for instance, is what other farm animals, mammals, what role they play," said Mr. Stohrer. "This virus had had very many surprises. And we should be proactive and get ahead of the curve now, not wait until the next animal species [is being] affected, and look at the large array of animals so that we can better anticipate what this virus might be doing in the future."

Hard Drives Dr. Stohrer and other international health officials are keeping a close watch on this year's A strain, which has been described as a ticking time bomb. It has so far struck provinces in Malaysia, Viet Nam, Thailand and China. While the number of deaths to date is small, many have occurred at top-notch hospitals with state-of-the-art care.
