Radar for the Rest of Us

Radar for the Rest of Us

Author: Allan Tarvid
I remember when you'd find radar on only the biggest, most expensive yachts. In fact, it was such a status symbol that some scurvy captains put empty radomes atop their boats so people would think they had radar. I remember, too, when electronics technicians with Thomas Edison-like technical brilliance had to install the units because the instructions alone demanded a learning curve steep enough to require four-wheel drive. Thanks to new technology, today's radars crop up on much smaller boats and require little more knowledge or effort to install, maintain and use than a GPS or VHF radio.

Laptop Battery Cost, too, has come way down. In shopping the marine electronics catalogs, you can find Raytheon's 2-kW Pathfinder LCD radars listed for less than $1,500. Furuno's 2-kW LCD models start at about $1,200, the 1.5-kW Si-Tex T150 sells for about $1,050 and JRC's 1.5-kW model 1000 is offered for as little as $899. More power is available for more money, but these units can bring affordable, close-range navigation and collision-avoidance benefits to nearly any fishing rig.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad Big-boat skippers spoiled by the superior detail of large CRTs may have been less than impressed when LCD radar displays were introduced. However, fishermen running open boats where displays get exposed to rain, spray and direct sunlight welcome the sunlight-visible and more water-resistant LCDs. The compact size of LCDs allows them to be mounted where CRTs can't fit. As Raytheon's Craig Cushman recently told me, consoles don't seem to be getting any roomier. The small, lightweight radomes used by these radars can also be mounted where bigger radomes or open-array antennas won't fit or are too heavy for the available structural support.

Microsoft Like navigation in general, highly specialized knowledge isn't a requisite to operate today's new radars. Some rival the newest fish finders in ease of operation.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers "Raytheon's new Pathfinder radars can run themselves with automatic tune, gain, rain- and sea-clutter adjustments," Cushman points out. "Certainly a skilled operator can switch to manual to fine-tune these settings, but under average conditions, a beginner probably couldn't beat the computer's adjustments. This, too, makes radar appeal to a wider range of boaters."

Laptop Computer Interpreting a radar screen image can be intimidating to a new user. Simrad's RA772 ultra-compact radar includes a 3D feature designed to help users identify targets. It displays targets in a unique overview that helps determine target size and shape by showing a representation of the height and width of land masses and other objects as they might be seen in a three-dimensional drawing. The 3D view can be shown next to the traditional view to help operators understand what they're looking at.

Description Have a friend with a laptop Do they always complain about the heat Cool them down with HandStands' Cool Lift. Designed to help promote air flow and reduce heat, the Cool Lift is perfect for notebook computers with the latest hot processors from Intel, AMD, Motorola, or IBM. Proof Shields for Laptops help prevent scratches from normal laptop use. Proof Shield. It even completely disappears when applied!

Desktop Computer As with most electronics today, manufacturers constantly add new features and functions to make radar more user friendly. For example, Koden's new MD-3441 with 7-inch CRT display has a simple menu system that offers instant mode selection, programmable function keys and an on-screen help feature that describes each mode.

Notebooks While it used to be unusual to find radar aboard a typical 28-foot Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) tournament boat, radar is now virtually standard equipment for SKA teams like those from Contender, Donzi, Fountain, Hydra-Sport and Wellcraft. Many of these teams have chosen Raytheon's RC series units that include charting and radar displays in the same box. On pretty days, they can use the RC unit as a full-screen chart-plotter while they travel and fish, switching to the radar only when they need it. Anglers with less room and more budget can consider Furuno's new LCD FRS1000 combination units. These include radar, DGPS, chart-plotting and fish-finding capabilities all in one case, sharing a 10.4-inch color TFT display. (See this month's New Electronics column.)

Lenovo Expect new radar technology to continue coming on strong in PC-based navigation systems, too. Nobeltec recently announced a joint venture with Koden, the parent company of Si-Tex, to build a black-box radar that will provide a more cost-effective way to show a radar image overlay on a chart-plotter screen. The company's new radar interface protocol (language) provides a simple way of transferring information between a radar and a computer. The product which looks very similar to a small radome, uses information from a GPS, heading sensor and radar antenna. Instead of using a stand-alone radar display, everything will appear on one computer screen. The radar image overlays a chart like those used in Nobeltec's Visual Navigation Suite. Point and click the on-screen controls to change radar settings like range, gain and threshold. Plan to see this new class of radar product appear on the shelves by the end of this year.

Hard Drive Here's the revolution: More efficient, multiple-unit electronics integration results in more versatile products. This versatility makes the advantages and cost of radar more practical and easier to access. If you haven't already mounted a radome on your boat, maybe now's the time to give the technology serious consideration.
