Thinkpad The governor's publicity stunt cleared the way for construction to begin on four new barrier-free, high-speed E-ZPass express lanes. Express E-ZPass will allow drivers to zip through the plaza at 55 mph while paying their tolls electronically.

Notebooks Serad works for Agate Construction Co. Inc., a Dennis Township, Cape May County, contractor that is installing the new express E-ZPass system. The $4.3 million project is scheduled for completion by Memorial Day, the start of the expressway's peak summer travel season.
Lenovo The 13-lane Pleasantville plaza will have a mixture of toll lanes when high-speed E-ZPass is ready. Motorists will still have the option of paying with either coins or cash or using the traditional E-ZPass lanes, where the posted speed limit is 15 mph.
Hard Drive The four high-speed lanes - two in each direction - will be built in the middle of the toll plaza. Concrete safety barriers will separate the lanes from the slow-speed traffic to avoid confusion and reduce the possibility of accidents.
Travelstar In place of traditional tollbooths, special equipment will be attached to overhead gantries to read the windshield-mounted E-ZPass transponders as vehicles pass underneath at normal highway speeds.
Gateway High-speed E-ZPass lanes will handle 2,200 vehicles an hour, nearly double the capacity of the other tollbooths. McGreevey said the technology will alleviate backups and make it much easier for motorists to travel to Atlantic City and its casino hotels.
Laptop Parts Express E-ZPass, however, hasn't been trouble-free. Confusion reigned when the New Jersey Turnpike recently introduced high-speed lanes at Interchange 18W, the gateway to the George Washington Bridge in New York. Turnpike officials were forced to install more signs to manage the flow of traffic.
Software State Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said high-speed E-ZPass is now operating smoothly at Interchange 18W. He also said that express E-ZPass has been working well at the Garden State Parkway's Hillsdale toll plaza in Bergen County, which has a similar layout to the expressway's Pleasantville plaza.
Hard Drives "If Hillsdale and now 18W are any indication, then this location should be an overwhelming success," Lettiere said.
Electronics The Pleasantville plaza serves as the main gateway to Atlantic City and is one of seven locations in New Jersey that will have high-speed E-ZPass lanes. In addition to Hillsdale, express E-ZPass will be available at the parkway's Toms River, Asbury Park and Raritan South toll plazas by summer 2005. On the turnpike, Interchange 16-18E will join 18W.
Canon McGreevey pushed the idea of high-speed E-ZPass as a compromise after he backed away from a campaign pledge to eliminate tolls on the parkway. Altogether, the state will spend $45 million to install express lanes on the three toll roads.
