Natural Gas Prices Are Fueling Calls For Investigation

Laptop Battery A surge in natural gas prices is raising fears of higher heating costs this winter and has prompted a demand in Congress for an investigation into possible price gouging and market manipulation.

If you have gas in your fireplace it will be either Natural Gas, or Liquid Propane Gas (LP). The majority of people have natural gas which is provided by the municipality they live in. Some people who live in a more rural area may have LP gas. This is usually stored in either a large above, or below ground tank that is filled by the provider when the supply runs low. Knowing your fuel type is necessary in purchasing gas logs since one fuel type will not work with the other.

Thinkpad Natural gas prices, on both the spot and futures markets, have soared nearly 50 percent since just before Thanksgiving. The spot price on a key trading center yesterday was $6.59 per thousand cubic feet compared with $4.45 on Nov. 25, an increase of 48 percent.

Microsoft Industrial users of natural gas have called for an investigation into possible market abuses. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, promised hearings into the issue.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers "We must determine once and for all if these price surges are the result of market forces or if there continues to be price manipulation," said Hatch.

Home standby systems can be fueled by natural gas, LP gas or diesel fuel. Many models can be connected to the home's natural gas line, eliminating the need to fill fuel tanks. Standby system capacities range from 6, 000 Watts up to 40, 000 Watts and more, even if you are not home.

Laptop Computer He said he couldn't understand how normal market forces could cause a 50 percent jump in price so quickly when supplies appear adequate.

Ofgem is seeking an investigation to find out why other EU countries are not selling more gas to Britain, amid growing fears about dwindling supplies and hefty price increases.

Desktop Computer Last week, the Energy Department said natural gas supplies remained at nearly 3 trillion cubic feet, slightly above the five-year average for this time of year, when the heavy winter heating season approaches.

Notebooks Analysts said a combination of events have spooked the market, including an onslaught of severe weather in the Northeast and Midwest and the memory of similar conditions a year ago when an unexpected cold spell caused a sudden drop in supplies and soaring prices.

Lenovo Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham told reporters yesterday that weather has been a factor in the price surge, but "it may not be the only factor."

Hard Drive Still, Abraham cautioned against "premature finger-pointing" and warned of continued price volatility in natural gas markets if production is not increased. While current stocks appear to be adequate, they are not at a comfortable levels, said Abraham.

Travelstar Analysts said that two recent weeks of higher-than-expected natural gas demand also led traders, who thought prices would moderate this winter, to shift gears and move to cover any potential losses, driving up prices.

Gateway Both the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission are keeping a close watch on natural gas markets, but neither agency has indicated anything illegal going on so far.

Laptop Parts "We are keeping a close watch. We watch the markets on a regular basis. We're are certainly aware of the situation," said FERC spokesman Brian Lee.

Software But some analysts argue there is no reason for gas prices to have increased so rapidly in recent weeks.

Hard Drives "Traders are hyping the markets. There are producers that are hyping the potential shortages. ... I don't want to call it a conspiracy, but all of these players are operating in concert," said Fadel Gheit, senior energy analyst at Oppenheimer & Co.

Electronics Others say the market only reflects the uncertainty about supplies because a sudden cold spell could quickly erase the supply cushion now in place. That's what happened last winter, causing prices to soar over $6 a thousand cubic feet.

Canon A few years ago, natural gas wholesale prices were in the $3 range.

Desktop Pc "The bottom line is you've got a jittery market." said Paul Wilkinson, an economist for the American Gas Association, which represents gas utilities.

Desktop Computers And the recent price increases on the wholesale markets -- both spot and for gas being delivered later this winter -- will translate into higher heating costs to millions of Americans who rely on the fuel.

Think Pad "There's no question. ... the prices today will get passed on," said Wilkinson, speaking for the gas utility retailers. "We're just in a sense a middleman."

Repair Earlier this year, the Energy Information Administration estimated that average heating costs for families using natural gas will be about 6 percent higher this winter, or about $850 for the heating season. But that assumed a normal winter and wholesale gas prices of about $5 a thousand cubic feet.

Data Recovery David Costello, an EIA economist, said a more recent estimate put winter heating costs at about 10 percent higher than last winter, but that estimate did not take into account the latest price surge.

Cisco The problem, said Costello, is traders are reacting to concern about cold weather this early in the heating season. That worries traders who wonder whether there will be adequate supplies later in winter if frigid weather surges, he said.

Keyboard "If we get through this month and (gas) storage is still normal the guess is that prices will correct downward," said Costello.

Monitor But for now, he said, "Clearly costs are higher and it's going to get passed through to the consumer."
