Help Me Choose: Linux vs. Windows Web Hosting

To help you choose the best operating system (OS) for your Web site to reside on, I have developed the following guidelines:

Laptop Battery First let's start with a definition of an operating system, which is the software platform on which a web server runs.

When looking for a web hosting company for your website, there are many variables to compare besides price. One important thing to compare is the type of servers the companies provides. scripts on your site may only run on a Windows based server but some hosting providers only have Linux based servers or the other way around. It's important to know what you need and what the company provides before you sign up for a web hosting plan.

Thinkpad Red Hat Linux:

How to find an ASP web host You will need to find a web host who will host your website on a Windows 2000 server. It is safer to host your ASP pages on a Windows 2000 server as they are more stable and most ASP components work with IIS (Internet Information Services), specific to Windows. You also need to consider if your web site uses a database (e.g. SQL, Access) and then make sure your web host provides support for the type of database your web site uses.

Microsoft Linux is an excellent operating system that is well suited to meet your web hosting needs. It handles the functions of mailing, and serving up Web sites and files especially well. Additionally, there are a huge amount of free applications available on the Internet for Linux and it uses less hardware resources than Windows 2003. Whether you are a fairly experienced webmaster or new to web hosting, we recommend that you choose Red Hat Linux as your hosting platform.

> Choosing a Web Hosting Plan Choosing a Web Hosting Plan Overview There are approximately 100 million Web sites on the Internet. They are "hosted" on computers (called web servers) all over the world. The web server (computer) where your Web site's information, photos, etc. reside, may be located in a home or office, but ideally, in a secure data center, and maintained by a "web host" (like WestHost). Web hosting clients simply upload their Web sites to either a shared web server (where many other clients are also hosting), or a dedicated web server (where the entire server is their own), which the web host maintains to ensure the Web site is always available, and can be accessed quickly (a fast download).

Laptop Computers Red Hat Linux is most widely used hosting platform in the world.

Windows hosting is often mistaken as a "must pick" only because the operating system you are running may be Windows. In fact, the majority of all websites on the Internet are hosted on the Linux platform, so most websites you have been visiting are likely to be hosted on Linux servers. If you have Windows on your machine, you can still manage a website hosted on a Linux server and also browse any website hosted on a Linux server. specific applications, such as ASP, ASP.Net, MS SQL Server or MS Access databases.

Laptop Computer Microsoft Windows 2003:

Aplus.Net Introduces Microsoft .Net and Windows 2003 Services Aplus.Net (www.aplus.net), a world leader in web hosting and domain services, has announced today the introduction of Microsoft .Net and Windows Server 2003 services. Ivan Vachovsky, CEO of Aplus. "We are pleased to offer our clients the very latest technology from Microsoft. It is clear that the .Net architecture represents the next wave in web and applications hosting. Our clients expect the fastest, most robust web hosting services, and Windows Server 2003 delivers that speed and reliability."

Desktop Computer Microsoft Windows 20003 server provides a suitable platform for serving up Web sites, files, and streaming media. Additionally, it integrates well with other Microsoft applications and there are a large amount of commercial applications available for this OS. We recommend you choose Windows 2003 as your hosting platform only if you are using specific applications that require Microsoft Windows to run such as Access, Cold Fusion, ASP, .Net, and Microsoft SQL.

Notebooks Note: Microsoft FrontPage may be used on both the Linux and Windows platforms.

Lenovo Please Note:

Hard Drive One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to select the same operating system for your hosting account that you use on your own computer. That is simply not true. This means you can select Linux for your hosting account if you currently use Windows 95, 98, NT/200, or XP on your own computer. We suggest that everyone who chooses a shared hosting plan, host their Web site on Linux if they are not utilizing ASP, Cold Fusion, or MSSQL 2000.

Travelstar I hope this article help you choose right hosting type.
