Luther swimming and diving surface two victories

The Luther College swimming and diving team competed in their first meet of the season Sat., Oct. 30, against the Duhawks at Loras College.

Loras proved no contest as the Norse swam away with a total 10 first place finishes, eight individual and two relays.

The Luther women's team dominated from the start as the relay team of Trisha Dunkel ('02), Randi Graney('03), Cara Asplund ('01) and Kelly Styba ('00) grabbed a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 2:05.19.

The Norse's 200 free relay team also grabbed first place in 1:50.98.

Leading the first place individual performances were senior Signe Gabrielson in the 1000 free with a time of 13:18.47.

Julia Haugen ('02) placed first in the 200 free (2:11.66) and 500 free (6:02.79).

Johanna Aiels ('02) led the field in the 100 and 50 free in 58.29 and 25.67, respectively.

In the 200 Individual Medley, Cara Asplund ('01) swam to victory in 2:29.16. Asplund also captured the 100 butterfly in 1:08.22.

Stephannie Haasis ('03) rounded out the top finishers for the Norse with a victory in the back stroke with a time of 1:07.39.

"The team swam well today," stated coach Kay McGrew if the women's squad.

The Norse men also defeated the Duhawks Sat., Oct. 30 with seven individual first place finishes, one individual second place finish, and two relay teams finished first.

The team lead off with the 200 Medley relay consisting of Dan Christensen('02), Jacob Bjork ('01), Matt Genes('01), and Lloyd Smith('02).

Luther also captured the 200 free relay in 1:33.08.

Rob Jung ('01) lead Luther's individual performances with a first place finish in the 1000 free in 10:51.06.

Senior Phil Bubb competed well dominating the 200 free in 1:50. 16 and the 100 free in 49:48.

Jason Steward ('00) was victorious in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.55 and the 100 back stroke with a time of 58.01.

Todd Gullickson ('00) defeated the competition in the 100 butterfly in 56.10.

Justin Courtney ('02)glided to a first place finish in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:05.40.

Damian-Eachan Dilley ('02) captured second place in the 50 free with a time of 23.78.

Sat., Nov. 6, the Norse will take one UW-Laccosse at home.
