Microsoft Current Analysis Displays Analyst Christian Dias reported that LCD monitors posted impressive sales gains during the week of Black Friday, which ended November 26, 2005. Promotional prices for 17- and 19-inch LCD monitor categories declined to less than $150 and $170, respectively, leading to a year-over-year increase of 36% in unit sales. The result was an unprecedented number of retail LCD monitor sales.

retail outlets, reported that combined sales on Friday and Saturday rose 7.2% y basis, while total sales on Black Friday rose by 8.3% y.

Laptop Computers According to Dias, low advertised prices allowed the 19-inch LCD segment to capture a record 41% of all retail LCD monitor sales in the week of Black Friday 2005 (compared to a 10% share during the same period in 2004). Although 17-inch LCD sales were able to top those of 19-inch products by capturing a 44% unit share, 17-inch LCDs also faced a 28% decline from the same week in 2004. 17-inch LCDs dominated last year's Black Friday sales week with a 72% share.

Desktop Computer Proview led LCD monitor sales for the week of Black Friday. Offering deep discounts and heavy promotions, the vendor captured 24% of the LCD market. Samsung followed with 20%, while HPQ (HP and Compaq combined) and Gateway (Gateway and eMachines combined) tied for the third-place spot with respective 17% shares.

Dias states that, "While last week's results might have been the climax of 2005, December may still hold surprises for the category as a whole. LCD monitors are hot items, and their recent price point declines are driving consumer demand. While we estimate that bundled sales contributed to 35% of all LCD monitor sales for the week of Black Friday 2005, the bulk of sales came from standalone purchases, which is a testament to the strong momentum of the category."
