According to the Identity Theft Research Center, over 10 million
cases of identity theft have been reported since 2000, with direct
costs related to these thefts for consumers totaling nearly $5
billion in 2003 alone. A rising number of these cases can be

viruses. Spyware and adware secretly monitor users online
activities and communicate them to third parties, such as an online
advertiser or in the worst-case scenario, a hacker looking to steal
a new identity.
