Brazil's Largest Public Technology Service Provider, Federal Data Processing Service, Selects Internet Security Systems to Protect Trade, Treasury, Tax and Transportation Systems
More than 1 billion Serpro transactions, including almost 19 million income-tax returns, protected by ISS' Proventia Intrusion Prevention Appliance in 2004
ATLANTA, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Brazil's largest public technology service provider, Servico Federal de Processamento de Dados (Serpro) today announced they have selected Internet Security Systems, Inc. (ISS) (NASDAQ:ISSX) to protect their more than one billion online transactions this year, including data from imports and exports, finance, vehicle registration and more than 19 million income-tax returns.
Serpro, Brazil's official Federal Data Processing Service, is the backbone of the government's Internet-based data network in a country ranked number 10 in world Internet usage just behind Canada and France(1). In addition to a growing number of federal agencies using Serpro's network, Brazilians have been filing tax returns via Internet since 1997, and the government expects that in 2005, nearly all tax returns in Brazil will be filed electronically.
"Serpro first began working with ISS in 1998, selecting the company based on its leadership in the intrusion detection space," said Indiana Kosloski Medeiros, information systems coordinator at Serpro. "As Serpro's role with the Brazilian government has increased and the number of income-tax returns filed online grows, it becomes increasingly important to protect our federal and state data and our citizens' sensitive demographic information. We realized we needed to take the next step to protect our users and selected a combination of ISS Proventia(R) Intrusion Prevention technology with SiteProtector(TM) centralized management. We believe that ISS gives us a significant edge in the fight against Internet threats because we're actually able to preemptively block attacks before they happen."
Backed by the ISS X-Force(R) security research and development team, the Proventia Intrusion Prevention Appliance delivers immediate product security updates, enhancements and network threat prevention, all before the client even knows there is a need. For ISS customers such as Serpro, this means that when their customers transmit sensitive information online, such as electronically filed tax returns or the Annual Social Information Report, they can do so without having to worry that their service provider's network is being penetrated.
"The changing face of Internet threats has made it imperative that today's service providers be security conscious," said Greg Adams, vice president of product management at Internet Security Systems. "The Proventia Intrusion Prevention Appliance is designed to help customers, such as Serpro, be proactive in regards to network security while not bogging them down in technical administrative tasks. This allows them to focus on growing their business while helping to ensure that existing customer data, such as sensitive tax filings or census information, are protected."
