Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Microsoft Use of the proprietary EarthLink/MSN/CompuServe/ATT/Prodigy/AOL browser is not supported. After logging on to the Internet with EarthLink/MSN/CompuServe/ATT/Prodigy/AOL minimize it to your taskbar and use a 5 or better version of Internet Explorer to log in to and navigate the site. Make sure you have installed the plug-ins for Internet Explorer.
Plugin Installation Checklist for MyMathLab and MathXL:
1. Spyware and Adware.
Spyware/Adware often uses the same port address that some of our plugins use and can prevent them from loading properly. You should use one or more of the Spyware/Adware removal tools that are freely available online like:
Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (beta) - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Pestpatrol - http://www.pestpatrol.com/
SpybotS&D - http://www.safer-networking.org
SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
Please remember that we do not endorse the use of any one of these products over another. In fact we recommend you use as many as possible because no single product will find all of the Spyware and Adware programs that are now online.
2. Windows 2000/XP users.
You must be logged onto the computer as a user with administrative rights in order to install the plugin software.
Go to your Control Panel then "Users and Passwords" or "User Accounts", and locate for your login name. If your login name is not designated as "Administrators" under the "Groups" column you will need to log out of your current login name and log back in with an administrators account.
3. Windows XP users.
You will first need to download and install Sun Microsystem's Java Virtual Machine: http://java.com/en/index.jsp
4. Turn off autohide if you have this enabled.
The first thing to look at is your taskbar setting. We were recently informed that, if you have the taskbar set to autohide, it interferes with some features of the site. To turn off autohide:
Click Start-->Settings-->Task Bar and Start Menu Remove the check mark from the box next to the Auto hide item Click "Apply", then click "OK" 5. Clear your Internet cache.
As you travel on the Internet your browser will store copies of the web pages you visit so that it can serve those up to you when you return to that page. This is done to speed the loading of web pages into your browser. However many of our sites need to be directly accessed to function correctly.
Open your Internet Explorer browser to any page at all Select Tools-->Internet options Click on the Delete Files button. PLEASE NOTE: Also put a check mark in the little box that pops up where it says "Delete All Offline Content". If you have not done this in a while, it will take a few minutes before you see the mouse arrow change back from the hourglass Click on the Delete Cookies button Click OK Click on the Settings button Select the first option at the top to check for newer versions of stored pages 'Every visit to the page' Click OK 6. Security settings.
While heightened security settings are perfectly understandable these days, the installation wizard and the MyMathLab/MathXL homework and testing areas will not function properly if they are set too high. Please check the following settings:
In Internet Explorer click on "Tools" then "Internet Options". In the "Internet Options" window click on the "Security" tab. Now click on the "Custom Level" button. In the "Security Settings" window, under the "ActiveX Controls and Plugin's" section make sure that the: "Download signed ActiveX controls" is enabled "Run ActiveX controls and plugin's" is enabled "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" is enabled In the "Microsoft VM" section: Java permissions must be set to no higher than medium In the "Scripting" section: All three options must be enabled. Click OK to close this window, you may be asked if you are sure you want to do this, confirm that you do then close the "Internet Options" window and finally your browser. Your browser must be restarted for the changes to take effect. 7. Configure browser cookie settings for your online course.
Some websites store information in a small text file on your hard disk. This is called a cookie. Cookies contain information about you and your preferences to help the site customize the view for you the next time you visit or while you are at that site. A cookie cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses. For all of our websites to work properly, your browser has to be set to accept cookies.
Internet Explorer 5x: - Click on Tools.
- Click on Internet Options.
- Go to the Security tab then click on the Custom Level button.
- Scroll down and look for Cookies Section, then enable all cookie options, click OK.
Internet Explorer 6.0: - Click on Tools.
- Click on Internet Options.
- Click on the Privacy tab.
- Click on the Advanced Button.
- Make sure the "Override automatic cookie handling", and "Always allow session cookies" boxes are checked.
- Click OK to close the windows.
Navigator 7.x: - Click on Edit.
- Click on Preferences.
- Click on the word Advanced.
- Click on Accept All Cookies, and then click OK.
8. Make sure no background programs or processes are running while installing plugins or taking your test.
This is especially true of anti-virus software, Instant Messengers, and pop-up blockers.
Temporarily disabling the antivirus program will not cause a problem as long as installing the plugins are the only thing you are doing and you re-enable it after this procedure is completed.
Our site does not serve up pop-up ads and any pop-up blocker in use may cause the download to time-out before it releases control of the browser. If you are getting pop-up ads while at our site and you have no other browser windows open then you most likely have Adware installed on your machine. You will need to clean your machine of any Malware before proceeding.
Look in the lower right corner of your screen, next to the digital time display. Now do a right-click on each of the icons that you see in your system tray. Each one will present you with a menu that will allow you to Close, Exit, Stop, or some option to make the icon go away. These programs can interfere with the successful installation of the plugins. Do not worry about items such as the volume control that do not give you a way to close them. Those should be OK.
For Windows 98/ME users only:
Hold down the "CTRL" and "Alt" keys and tap the "Delete" key once. In the window that opens up, highlight an item in the list and click on "End Task". Repeat this process until the only things listed in that window are "Explorer" and "Systray". 9. Users with firewalls.
If you are running a firewall you may need to add the following IP addresses to the "Trusted Zone" or it's equivalent in your firewall:
www.coursecompass.com www.mymathlab.com www.mathxl.com Because there are so many firewall programs available in the marketplace, we are unable to provide specific instructions on how to accomplish this task. Please refer to your firewall help guide within the software if you have any difficulty adding these web addresses to your firewall.
