MX Logic Reports Can-Spam Compliance Dips below 1 Percent in July, Representing Lowest Monthly Compliance to Date
Eighty-Four Percent of all Email Traffic in July Is Spam
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2004-- MX Logic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative email defense solutions that ensure email protection and security for enterprises, service providers, government organizations, resellers and their customers, today announced that compliance with the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act fell below 1 percent in July. On average only 0.54 percent of a sample of unsolicited commercial email in July complied with the federal anti-spam law. This is the lowest monthly compliance since the law went into effect on Jan. 1.
MX Logic also reported that 84 percent of all email traffic through the MX Logic Threat Center during July was spam -- up from 75 percent in June.
"No one should be shocked by the decrease in compliance," said Scott Chasin, CTO, MX Logic. "The CAN-SPAM Act was never designed to be an antidote for spam. The law provides a definition of legally unacceptable email marketing practices and empowers consumer protection agencies and ISPs to go after hardcore spammers, but it cannot by itself control the onslaught of spam. What we need now is progress on other fronts, namely, industry cooperation on email authentication protocols, continued technological innovation and end-user education.
"Work currently underway in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) on email authentication protocols, including the proposed Sender ID -- a merger of Caller ID and Sender Policy Framework (SPF) -- is the most promising industry-wide effort to stem spam to date," Chasin added.
The IETF is holding its 60th Meeting in San Diego from Aug. 1 to Aug. 6, where Chasin said he hopes consensus will be reached on an email authentication protocol. Email authentication helps verify the origins of email, making it more difficult for spammers to stay in business. Specifically, the IETF is examining protocols, including Sender ID, that allow for the publication of Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) authorization records in the Domain Name System (DNS).
The CAN-SPAM Act requires that unsolicited commercial email senders:
-- Ensure that the "FROM" line clearly reflects the sender's identity
-- Include subject line text consistent with message content
-- Include the advertiser's valid postal address
-- Contain a working opt-out mechanism as a way for the consumer to decline to receive further commercial email from the sender
Powering MX Logic's Email Defense solutions is MX Logic's Threat Center, a sophisticated streaming-data environment where MX Logic monitors the global state of email communication 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and provides MX Logic's customers with real-time updates and protection. Led by email security experts with extensive experience in protecting messaging networks, the Threat Center provides dynamic email defense -- staying ahead of the next attack by continually incorporating information about the latest spammer, virus and worm tactics.
MX Logic tracks compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act by examining a random sample of 10,000 unsolicited commercial emails each week. Media and analysts interested in receiving monthly CAN-SPAM compliance statistics can subscribe to MX Logic's CAN-SPAM update by sending an email to canspam@mxlogic.com.
