Laptop Battery County officials, after finding a second crow testing positive for West Nile virus this week, are advising residents to remain aware that the disease is present.
Forty dead crows from Ocean County have been tested so far this year. In 2002, the county submitted 166 birds for testing. Seventy of them tested positive for West Nile virus. Residents who wish to report a dead crow may call the county Health Department at (732) 9700, Ext. 7502. Only large adult crows with black eyes are tested, not the smaller grackles with yellow eyes, according to the department.

West Nile virus has reached Cumberland County for the first time this year, the state Department of Health and Senior Services reported Monday. State Health Department testing revealed that a dead crow recovered at an unspecified location in the county was carrying the encephalitis virus. So far this year, 341 crows have tested positive for the disease in New Jersey, including four in Cape May County, and one each in Atlantic and Ocean counties. Also, the state has found the virus in mosquito pools from Atlantic, Burlington and Cape May counties, among others.

The most preventative treatment against West Nile virus for horses is a vaccination, according to the Department of Agriculture Secretary Charles M. Kuperus. "We recommend that horse owners have their horses vaccinated against the potentially deadly disease, " he said. Bruner said five dead crows have tested positive for West Nile virus, out of the 20 that have been submitted to the state for evaluation so far.
