Best Sports Game 2004

Laptop Battery Mario Power Tennis

Published by Nintendo
Developed by EAD
Released November 8, 2004

Why we chose it: The Nintendo GameCube played host to a number of sports games in 2004, most of them representing a hard-action realistic look at football, baseball, or basketball. One sports title rises above the rest, however, and its not exactly a regulation sports rendition (and we mean that in a good way). Whenever Mario comes to the court he comes to win, and Nintendo and Camelot Software Planning teamed up once again to bring Mario and the cast of the Mushroom Kingdom together again for Mario Power Tennis. Combining plenty of character humor, outstanding representations of some of gamings most classic characters, and a knock-out control scheme, Mario Power Tennis provides plenty of traditional tennis action on standard courts plus a wide variety of so-called Gimmick Courts that add obstacles and bonuses based on various games from both the Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong Country families for both one player or team matches for up to four players. Add in some tennis-based mini-games designed to test even the best players limits and its easy to see why Mario Power Tennis is GCAs choice for 2004 Sports Game of the Year.
