Tales of Symphonia

Tales of Symphonia

Laptop Battery Tales of Symphonia has been a long running series in Japan. It's considered the third most popular RPG in the old West behind successful ones as Final Fantasy. Not many versions of the game were released in the U.S. You might recall a game called Tales of Destiny for the PSX, the last chapter of the series'. It was just a matter of time before Namco would announce a sequel as the GameCube has been hungering for a classic RPG since its debut in 2001, and its stomach will soon be filled as Tales of Symphonia is set to be released for the GameCube. Tales of Symphonia is the latest chapter of the Tales series which is not very noticeable here, but very huge in Japan. This classic RPG features high-quality Anime cut scenes, real-time 3D battles, formation attacks and combos, and customization of abilities for each character. The game comes to life in a full 3D experience in an adventure which places you on the existence and survival of two worlds.

The game is very in-depth storywise as well. You start off as a seventeen year old named Lloyd Irving, a kid raised by dwarves. Lloyd and a couple of buddies, Genius Safe and Collet Brunell the shaman, must gather together to save two worlds from destruction. You start off on Silvaland, a world with a tremendous loss of mana which is the source of all life. What is the trouble with this world you ask? Well, there is really two worlds, Silvaland and Teseila, which seem to share a connection. When one world becomes successful in bringing in mana the other suffers with losses, and vice versa. What must be done is both worlds must find a balance between them so each world is equal to the other. Lloyd and pals must find this balance while also destroying the monsters attacking the worlds. The game is very straight forward, but you can have many things happening at the same time. This is where the "scenario" option kicks in. This option keeps track of actions taking place with the character so you don't lose track of anything in the game. There is also a "skit" feature which allows players to talk with each party member and open up each others personalities and life. The relationships you make with key characters can have a major effect on you later in the game. Your relationship depends on the choices you make, and the characters future relies on what you say or do at the time you speak with them.

The battle system can be recognized in other classics such as Grandia. The battles take place in a fully 3D area and are known as the "Multi-Line Linear Motion Battle" system. The characters are free to roam and attack using melee weapons with magical spells. But alas, enemies are also spread out in the area and are able to what they desire. You have full control of the main character, whereas the other characters are computer controlled, but you're still able to set them up with several attacks to use. During the battle, you can pause and input attacks and commands sort of like the battles in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A new option was created, EX Skills, which basically dubs your character with a certain ability. You equip EX Gems which change the parameters of the characters improving and adding attacks. The EX Gems classify the type of character you have such as a "strike" character who rushes the enemies head on. This effects the game based on which type you are. The new skills you learn go with the type you are, and as you gain experience from each battle you will be able to get new skills. You must equip a different EX Gem to learn skills from different fighting types.

You must travel through dungeons that hold many surprises. Traps are common in these dungeons from spikes to gas chambers, all of which must be avoided somehow to move forward with the game. Puzzles are also present within the game. When you're tired or just want to talk, you can walk into a town and basically do what you want. All the townsfolk can be spoken to throughout the town and buildings are fully accessible. In town, you will be able to purchase new items, form a strategy, and rest for the on-going journey. The game looks very nice, kind of like a comic mixed with cartoons. It moves away from the more hardcore realistic look that game publishers seem to be using and takes a new route for a traditional style from the SNES days with spice on top for the new generation. Famed artist, Kosuke Fujishima, gives his experience and skill to the game drawing the nicely shaped characters with vibrant colors in an anime sort of style. It resembles the Wind Waker with its colors and feeling. The game is in full-rendered 3D moving away from the past 2D versions.

The newly formed Namco development house, Tales Studio, seems to be putting all of their heart and power into making this one of the best RPG's ever. From what it looks, it has. Tales of Symphonia has made a successful debut in Japan selling well over 250,000 copies in its first week and receiving rave reviews from gamers and publications as well. The game promises to be exactly what fanatics of RPG's crave. Tales of Symphonia is set to be released in Spring 2004 exclusively for Nintendo GameCube. Stay tuned to GCA for more coverage as the game nears its release.
