Laptop Battery An appeals court Thursday cleared the way for thousands of acres of new homes to be built on septic systems without state environmental reviews designed to prevent water pollution.
The state Department of Environmental Protection may keep its rules governing development along New Jersey's coast, a state appeals panel ruled Friday. "The court upheld the standards and protections for our coastal areas that will help ensure that new growth doesn't adversely affect our environment, " said DEP Commissioner Bradley Campbell. Campbell said the DEP rules, put into place late last year, do not put a halt to development, but rather channel it to more appropriate areas.

Desktop Computer DEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell said he was disappointed in not getting the stay, because 2,500 proposed homes on 8,900 acres can now be built without certain water-quality reviews.

Lenovo Jeff Tittel, director of the Sierra Club's New Jersey chapter, said the ruling was a "a victory for pollution and sprawl."
Hard Drive Patrick O'Keefe, chief executive officer of the New Jersey Builders Association, has said the DEP did not approve a single housing development since the septic rule was adopted more than a year ago. He wasn't immediately available for comment Thursday.
