Thinkpad But bottles, cans and paper are just the start of what can be recycled. Take a look around the neighborhood the next day garbage is collected -- furniture, lamps, clothes, towels, tools, appliances, scrap metal and wood can be found on almost any given block.

Computers that have printers attached (called print servers) have to be turned on if you want to print from a remote computer. If the computer is turned off, turn it on. It doesn't matter whether you know the logon password for the user name that appears during the logon process; nobody has to be logged on to a computer to use its shared printer. The Windows operating system on that computer simply must be started.

Microsoft Much of the stuff bound for landfills still has a lot of life left in it -- it just takes a little creativity, says Jon M. Clark, owner of Home & Planet Earth Friendly Furnishings on East Third Street in South Bethlehem.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. "Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer The items in his store attest to that.

Notebooks Beautifully crafted tables made from Bethlehem Foundry and Machine Co. patterns and recycled J. Birney Crum Stadium stands are examples of handcrafted products made from locally used materials.

Lenovo The artist of such products, Bill Kreider, who works out of an old Allentown silk mill, says on his Web site that he enjoys saving materials that would otherwise be thrown out and turning them into furniture.

Hard Drive "He is saving Lehigh Valley artifacts while creating new pieces of art," Clark says of Kreider.

Travelstar Clark says all of the items in Home & Planet must be stylish, functional and have an environmental benefit.

Gateway One such item is a line of handbags made from old cigar boxes. Created by a Lehigh University professor, some of the cigar boxes are wooden, others are cardboard. The handles are made of polished glass turned into beads.

Laptop Parts Trendy black bags made from recycled tires are another illustration of the stylish, functional, earth-friendly products found in the store. The tires are processed into a soft, leather-like material.

Software "This is really a great application of recycling," Clark says of the bags. "They are an example of a huge problem and a solution to that problem."

Hard Drives For reference, Americans discard 280 million tires each year, according to the EPA.

Electronics While tires are an obvious environmental hazard, one New York City artist took to the streets -- literally -- to find an obscure object that would likely be overlooked in the quest for recycled products to use in art.

Canon "He uses old street sweeper bristles," Clark says. "That's his medium."

Desktop Pc The bristles are used to craft chic metal sculptures.

Desktop Computers "The street sweep bristles are a resource to create something new," Clark adds, before moving on to several more examples of recycling -- from things like metal stars for outdoor decoration made from old roofs to ceremonial voodoo bottles made from empty rum bottles.

Think Pad Of course, not just anyone can turn trash into treasure.

Repair "It takes an eye for detail, an imagination and lots of patience," Clark explains.

Data Recovery Several artists from Pennsylvania and New Jersey have contributed to the high-end products found in his store.

Cisco But don't worry, even if you're not exactly artsy, you can do more on behalf of the Earth than traditional curbside recycling. There are hundreds of outlets for donating used products like furniture, appliances, clothing and home improvement supplies.

Keyboard The REplace in Allentown, for example, has taken 500 tons of items once classified as garbage out of the waste stream since the store opened more than two years ago.

Monitor "That's a lot of trash," says Bill Eismont, the store's manager.

Desktop A division of Good Shepherd, the REplace on 26th Street S.W, is a retail outlet that offers an eclectic blend of recycled, restored and renewed products. Good Shepherd work services' clients are employed there, making sure items function and preparing them for sale.

Infosys A walk around the warehouse reveals appliances, light fixtures, office furniture, fabric, mirrors, bathroom sinks and leftover building supplies -- all in good shape and ready for a new home. Some of the products, like tile, marble and doors, are new items left over from construction sites.

Refurbished Laptops "Contractors love this place because they drop off their leftovers for free," explains Bob Mikovitch, the warehouse supervisor. "They have to pay to send stuff to the landfill."

Wipro For the do-it-yourself set, the REplace makes dealing with leftovers a whole lot easier.

Lap Top "People will completely redo their kitchens and bathrooms -- not because there's anything wrong with them, but just because they want a change," Mikovitch says. The REplace accepts old kitchen and bathroom cabinets, sinks and light fixtures. Good Shepherd trucks are dispatched to pick up the resulting large loads.

Refurbished "Don't pay to get rid of stuff left over from projects," says Terri Geave, the production liaison for REplace. "Donate it."

Memory Tax receipts are given with donations and transfers from donated cars are handled by REplace.

Intel Organic Style magazine editor Peggy Northrop says just about anything can be donated and written off.

As400 "You would be surprised at how many things can be recycled easily," she says.

Averatec The Rodale Press magazine is targeted to women who are interested in living more environmentally-conscious lives. A recent article outlined just how many opportunities there are to divert things from the landfill.
