Trend Micro Holds Top Revenue Positions in Internet Gateway, Mail Server, and File Server Antivirus Markets
Company surpasses overall antivirus market growth rate from 2002 2003, based on new market study
Cupertino, California August 31, 2004 Trend Micro, Inc. (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, today announced that it has been identified as the market revenue leader in the Internet gateway, mail server, and file server antivirus markets, based on a recently issued market analysis by IDC entitled Worldwide Antivirus 2004-2008 Forecast and 2003 Competitive Vendor Shares. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Trend Micro has led the gateway market.
According to the IDC report, Trend Micro also experienced a significant annual revenue growth in 2003 (of 35.4%) in the $222 Million (USD) file server antivirus market, moving Trend Micro into the top position. Trend Micro experienced growth of 26% and 31% in the mail server and gateway antivirus markets, respectively, and surpassed the overall antivirus market growth of 21% from 2002 to 2003 in all three market categories, according to IDC.
Trend Micro has for several years now proven themselves to be a substantial player in the antivirus market, having created a niche market at the gateway and servers that are now requirements for other vendors, commented Brian Burke, senior research analyst for IDC. Additionally, Trend Micro has been at the forefront of new security trends we have identified, namely, the convergence of spam and viruses, spyware, and the need for quicker response times to threats.
According to the IDC study, Trend Micro accounted for $383 million in revenue and a 14% share of the $2.7 Billion (USD) antivirus software market in 2003. IDC expects the antivirus market to reach $4.85 Billion (USD) in 2008, with significant growth expected from the Internet gateway and mail server markets.
Major virus attacks in 2003 were a mix of worms targeted at known vulnerabilities and traditional mass-mailing viruses; network worms are quickly becoming a more significant threat to organizations. In a recent IDC survey of North American firms, 31% of respondents indicated viruses, trojans, and malicious code as being the single greatest threat and another 10% indicated network worms as the greatest threat -- spyware ranked fourth on the list of single greatest threats in 2004.
We are very proud that our continued market leadership has been once again confirmed by IDC, said Steve Chang, CEO and founder of Trend Micro. At the same time, we are looking to the future of the security industry and through Trend Micros innovation and leadership, plan to continue shaping the way the industry looks at computing threats, especially for increasingly prevalent network-based threats.
