Nintendo Talks Revolution & DS Online

Laptop Battery Just a few weeks after the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for short) has come to an end, Nintendo has held a press conference for members of the media in Japan. The meeting took place yesterday in Japan, where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata discussed the successor to GameCube, called Revolution. On hand at the event was Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, as well.

Nintendo reiterated much of what the company shared with gamers last month at its annual pre-E3 press conference. The company talked about downloadable NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 games, saying that that their will in fact be a fee to purchase games over Revolutions downloadable game service. However, Nintendo did say that some games would appear as free for a limited time only. The company didnt give any clues as to how many of the hundreds of NES, SNES and N64 games would be available through the service.

The Revolution hardware itself will feature a built-in flash memory capacity of 512MB, allowing gamers to download a number of games as well as save their game progress from Revolution software to the system itself. Nintendo will also sell SD cards (short for Secure Digital), which will allow players to have access to more storage capacity. SD cards are already a format PC users are familiar with, with the cards already available on the market in several different sizes, including 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and even 1GB. No price points were given for Nintendos SD cards.
With the internal flash memory, Nintendo hinted that firmware upgrades for Revolution are not out of the question. On the subject of why it opted for flash memory over a hard drive, Nintendo stated that it believes children as young as five-years-old could be drawn to Revolution, thus it thinks a HDD could be easily damaged by being dropped.

Although Nintendo already revealed the compact, stylish system itself at E3 last month, it did reiterate that the final system design would be even smaller and consume very little power. How this affects the systems overall power was not touched upon.

The latest issue of Japanese publication Famitsu also confirmed a Nintendo-made wireless USB network adapter that can be hooked up to the PC and act as an access point for the DS and Revolution. Specific details haven't been released.

Shigeru Miyamoto, at the conference, also said that Nintendo has invested a lot in the Revolutions mysterious controller, which Nintendo president Satoru Iwata would not comment on other than saying, "I think you will be surprised by the Revolution's controller."

Miyamoto responded: "We're at a stage where we're adding and removing various kinds of functions, which has been very fun," he said. Miyamoto went on to say that Nintendo's main cause for removing functions is concern that the controller could become too complex, making gameplay overly difficult." "The Revolution will have an interesting interface. We're investing a lot of money into the [development of the] interface, and it's still not finalized," said Miyamoto.

In terms of software, Nintendo said that the Revolution would be home to many small-budgeted, simple videogames, though epic videogames like The Legend of Zelda would appear on the system.

Before wrapping up the conference, Nintendo talked briefly about the Nintendo DS and its online service, saying that it plans to install 1,000 free WiFi hotspots throughout the country of Japan. Nintendo will support the free online service further by releasing at least two WiFi-ready titles, Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing DS, later this year.

Well have more on both the Revolution and the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as it happens.
