Lowrance is right at home in the big leagues with its introduction of VHF radios, radars and, perhaps most impressive, hard-drive-based navigation units. That's right. Lowrance has chart plotter/sounders with built-in, shock-proof 20-gigabyte hard drives to run all the memory. And these units need that memory because for $200 extra Lowrance installs almost 4,000 dollars' worth of charts that include the coastal United States, Hawaii and Alaska, Great Lakes, U.S. Enhanced Lake Maps and Fishing Hot Spots Elite, topographical cartography, inland streets and more than 2 million points of interest. The hard drive also allows much faster page update/refresh. Of course, you can always use Navionics cartography, too.
The top-of-the-line
GlobalMap 7600C HD ($1,899) and the
LCX-111C HD plotter/sounder ($2,449) enjoy improved display technology, also. The SolarMax 10.4-inch, SVGA display, with a 600- by 800-pixel resolution, shows bright and clear in direct sunlight and widens the viewing angle.
Twelve-channel GPS and WAAS both come as standard in every unit, and two waterproof slots let you use MMC or SD memory cards to store geographical or sounder information for future reference.
Other noteworthy standard features include an Ethernet expansion port, audio output, free hard-drive space for GPS/sonar information storage, 1,000-Watt sounder output for 3,000-foot penetration and 50/200-kHz operation.
This doesn't even skim the surface of all the new products Lowrance has to offer.
