Opinions Diverge On Culling Mountain Lakes Deer Herd

Laptop Battery Susan Landau hikes almost daily in the Tourne, the county park that runs through Mountain Lakes, Denville and Boonton Township. Over the last few years, however, she has noticed a change in her beloved forest.

While last year's culling took 30 deer, Brown said officials want to see 50 to 60 deer killed this spring. If Deer Management Systems is successful in reaching that number, the net effect is preventing the herd from increasing by more than 150 deer, given the fact that many does have at least two fawns, he said.

Thinkpad "The little baby trees ... there just aren't any," she said.

But Schrier thinks the federal government should get more aggressively behind the effort to solve a problem that goes far beyond Morris County and the state's borders. member freeholder board were supportive of the measure yesterday, though they successfully urged Schrier to delay a vote for a couple of weeks to allow area sportsmen to be queried on the issue. The Morris County Park Commission allows hunting in several county parks that have been overrun with deer. Some towns in Morris County, including Mountain Lakes and Harding, also have opted for deer hunting to reduce herd sizes.

Microsoft The Mountain Lakes Environmental Commission and the Morris County Parks Commission have also noted the lack of underbrush. Both say the cause is deer that have eaten the native plants low to the ground. The damage interrupts the food chain, allows the growth of invasive plants and threatens the forest's future.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers Their opinions diverge, however, when it comes to what to do about those deer.

In an effort to reduce a growing herd in Summit, the city is looking to cull up to 60 deer, officials said. This week, bait is being set out to attract the deer to three areas and shooting will commence next week, City Administrator Stuart Brown said.

Laptop Computer Mountain Lakes plans to apply for a state permit to hire professionals to thin the deer herds using shotguns and corn bait. They hope to use the professionals in the 548-acre Tourne and neighboring 165-acre Wilcox Park, and they hope that Morris County might help with the cost of such an operation.

Desktop Computer But Morris County parks director Dave Helmer said last week that was unlikely.

Notebooks "We would not spend money on bringing in sharpshooters," he said. Rather, he said, if Mountain Lakes felt there was a deer problem in the area, the county park system would consider adding the Tourne to the list of county parks that are opened to the public for limited hunting during the regular hunting season.

Lenovo "We just feel that's a more effective use of taxpayer dollars," Helmer said.

Hard Drive The Mountain Lakes Environmental Commission, which has spent the last two years assessing the borough's deer population and researching management options, believes public hunting in the Tourne is unsafe because the park is small, and residential development surrounds it.

Travelstar It would rather hire Deer Management Systems, a professional hunting company that has been used to cull deer in Summit and Millburn, Bernards and Bridgewater townships.

Gateway "We think the professional culling operation can be done safely," said Paul Shorb, chairman of the borough's environmental commission. The cost would come to about $200 per deer. Details on how many deer were to be eliminated are still being worked out, but Shorb guessed it would be about 100.

Laptop Parts In March, Mountain Lakes and the county partnered to have an aerial survey conducted. It found 130 deer in the borough, and 11 in the Tourne. That's 65 deer per square mile in Mountain Lakes. Town officials believe the deer sleep during the day in the Tourne, and feed on the lawns and gardens of Mountain Lakes at night.

Software Last year, a survey sent to borough residents found the respondents had spent at least $73,240 replacing landscaping damage caused by deer, and 13 percent reported traffic "incidents" caused by deer, with property damage estimated at more than $71,000.

Hard Drives Three-quarters of those who responded indicated support for culling the herd if it could be done safely.

Electronics Animal rights organizations have come out against culling. They say killing deer increases deer fertility because animals are killed before they get to a stage of life where they reproduce less.

Canon "People have to have patience and you have to understand that you're maybe going to have to start living with deer," said Sue Russell, a spokeswoman for the Center for Animal Protection in Rumson. "And in the instances where nothing else can be done, start promoting nonlethal alternatives."

Desktop Pc But others argue that the deer no longer have any natural predators, and that has led to the population explosion. Letting them grow unchecked, they argue, leads to an ecosystem out of balance.

Desktop Computers Rob Jennings, outdoor education coordinator for the county parks system, said the deer feeding has destroyed most native species in the Tourne and allowed more exotic plant species to gain a foothold in the forest. "The greatest damage is to the future forest," he said.

Think Pad If the county chose not to come on board, Shorb said, it is feasible that Mountain Lakes would use Deer Management Systems in Wilcox Park, which is adjacent to the Tourne and is borough property.

Repair But in the end, Shorb said, a regional solution will likely be necessary. "If we succeed in getting the deer herd reduced to the so-called ideal level where tree saplings can actually live and native shrubs can return ... at what rate will deer from those neighboring areas ... will they migrate in?

Data Recovery "Our hope is that neighboring towns will also start being more active. In the long run, I don't think it will make sense if we're the hole in the donut."
